Default Gulf Stream guys, do you chum?

Do you chum when you go to the blue water? If so, what do you use and which fish are you trying to attract?

I have not done it in NC, but a lot of the boats used to chunk for yellow fin and blue fin where I used to live.

Basically, chunking is chumming with pieces of butter fish and a piece on the hook.

I think the Oregon Inlet charters do some chunking for YFT.

Yup, Squid said it right. Fall in NC is chunk season. You'll scratch fish on your color machine, usually 100-300' in 100 or so fathoms, move up current and start the butterfish.

A lot of times in the spring in FL/NC when we are picking gaffers off weedlines we will find a long stretch of weeds in good HOH and put out cat food, menhaden/oil, squid, et al. When doing this we ALWAYS fish livies deep [50-100']. Bigger fish are ususlly down a little. If the fish are on the line, they will eventually come into the chum line as long as yoiu can keep the boat/chum close to the weedline. Patience is the key!

a buddy of mine soaks a big sponge like item in shad oil for 3 days and then uses that creates a great big solid slick works great no breaks like using cut bait for chunking

When I was fishing the offshore canyons up north. We always were chumming. We chummed with menhaden and then chunked with butterfish. We caught quite a bit of tuna this way to include Bigeyes and even some makos. I have never chummed down here however. I am going to try it in a few weeks. I actually will be chumming with menhaden and then live-lining poggies in the slick. I really enjoy live bait fishing. I hope to target some big Wahoo and Dolphin. I am also going to try to chum up some sharks on another trip. Saw some big hammerheads and other sharks last time out. Will let you know how it goes!!
