Pirates Cove/Manteo area
Newer boaters considering Memorial Day week trip boating/fishing sound off of Pirates Cove. No ocean or bad weather - we know our limitations. That being said, any advice as far as boating and fishing that area? Thanks.

Nice public ramp under the bridge at PC. You can head north for a nice ride. South is nice as well. Stay in the channel. Not much fishing back there but I have only used that ramp in Dec,Jan and Feb. Have a great time!

Very shallow lots of sand bars and debris, if you do not have a good gps, get a current chart. If neither, use the Crab pot rule, if you cant see the top of the crab pots you know your in atleast 2.5 feet of water.

Don't let them scare you, We stayed at the Peninsula the last 5 summers, will be back for 2 weeks in June / July. Take a run down to the inlet via the channel and fish around the bridge. If you think your going to have any issues follow one of the charter boats out. Yes the bay can get pretty shallow, personally I've never seen less than 3 feet. I've run the boat all over the bay from off of KDH to Pea Island. I usually take the kids boarding to the east of PC. I think the biggest problem you need to watch for is the dam crab pots. They are worse than the jet skiers.

so now I'm torn. maybe we'll just go anyway.. gotta learn somehow. it's not like we're gonna tear around or stretch the limits much, we're pretty reasonable.

"Peninsula" and "Bay"?
Are you talking about hampton roads and the chesapeake bay?
Or is you know it all tone referring to the northern beaches and the sounds?
It gets a LOT shallower then 3ft. Just be careful. Youll be fine, its just sand.

Their is very little Tidal change unless the water is being blown in or out of the Bay
The Peninsula I'm referring to smart ass is a small neighborhood of homes on a U shape canal just west of PC. I guess you don't know your own area that well. I for one think its nicer than PC. Very quite and the rental homes are cheaper. They also have their own boat ramp. Don't get me wrong, PC is a nice place and we have stayed there in the past. See link, then zoom out
You will be fine, just be alert and don't take any chances. Keep an eye on your depth finder and the crab pots. If it looks like it gets shallow up ahead, it does, slow down. Oregon Inlet can be a little hairy so be very careful in that area. In the sounds you should be fine as long as you try to stay in open water. When you get down here, take a look at the local charts at the PC ships store. You'll get an idea of what you are dealing with. Have fun.
Don't be scared off. You'll have a great time. Get a chart of the area so you can see where it is shallow and where it is not. You can have plenty of fun staying in the channel. Watch where other boats go and don't go. Broad Creek (more like a bay) has consistent depth and is a good protected spot for water sports. It will be a lt easier for you if you have a depth finder on your boat. You don't need anything fancy.
If you have a slip in pirates cove you can launch at the ramp under the bridge.
I stoped in pc on wed. when I took my sea cat to be fitted for canvas in
wanchese (south of PC) to early for the Restaurant to be open,so we had to do lunch elseware .
E-mail me your phone number a I'll give you some ideas.
Three friends limited out on flounder wednesday,so the bight has started.
Just check with them where you can park your trailer. Some houses you can put them underneed but if you renting a condo you don't have any storeage for the trailer and you will have to park it off site.
To fish, head south of PC follow the channel down towards the inlet, either fish around the inlet or fish Old School House channel area for trout, flounder, croker, bluefish etc. Use Gulp shrimp rigged Carolina style instead of a jig head.

Don't worry, we feel the same way about yankee tourons.
Several years ago, P.C. had an offsite LOCKED/FENCED parking/storage lot about 1-1/2-2mi. down the road in Manteo. FREE to renters.
As was said, if you are renting a home or certain condos, they'll let you park the trailer UNDER the unit - but only IF it COMPLETELY fits! There's no parking trailers/boats in the parking lots or driveways.
We rented a home on "Sailfish(?) Canal" (next canal over from the marina) and had 25ft. dock space INCLUDED with it - VERY nice and convenient! Boat was right out back - maybe 25ft. from the deck w/water and electric at the dock. Not ALL condos come with dock space, though - they'll usually say so in the rental info.
We also used the public ramp across the road - under the bridge - to launch and haul out the last day we were there. Fortunately, the boat ON the trailer was JUST "short" (height) enough to fit under the home for that one night (we kept the trailer under there the entire week).
Vacationed at PC for 10 years and always pleased with their hard work to make accomodations. Stayed in condos at marina front without boat slip one year and they made arrangements with marina for no charge, $ per ft. per night can add up to a nice dinner at weeks end. Good luck with the fishing just watch the channels I got in trouble with a 6hp mounted to 2 16' canoes rigged up catamaram style, 3" - 4" draft in 2" - 3" water with lots of bottomless mud. Lots of water at the bridge with a variety of fish. Cobia should be there as they crushed them at Hatteras this weekend.
