Default charter or freelance?

I know this might sound a little unusual coming from a college kid but my parents sacrifice so much for me while I am in college, instead of making my birthday about me I wanted my father to enjoy it as well. He was an extremely avid fisherman before I went to college, now he rarely goes more than 3 times a year and I can tell he misses it badly. I wanted to try to put him on some fish for my birthday, kind of a secret reverse present. His favorite fish to catch is trout but from past experiance we always fished for red drum this time of year. So I was looking into a 1 day charter with the speckled specialist out of north topsail vs taking the same money, paying for a hotel for about 2 nights, and spending a 3 day weekend freelancing it on his 17 CC. Which sounds like the best idea? have a better idea? Thanks!

I agree, this time of year, you could work yourself to death, and not catch a fish. Rick will put you on the fish if they are there to be had. Local knowledge, especially this time of year is crucial.
Enjoy the time spent with your dad, and may you two get to spend many days on the water together in the future.

I've been out with Ricky and he certainly knows what he's doing and is a good guy also. The trip was with a friend who keeps his boats at Sneads Ferry and is an accomplished angler and we still learned a lot.

Ricky is top notch. I'd spend the money and go him. Less hassle for your dad, and much more likely to put a good catch in the boat. Like was said, if they can be had, Ricky will find them for ya. Either way though, it's a classy move on your part.
