I am still looking for a place in the Fayetteville area to inspect my trailer. I hope they supply a list of inspection stations that will do the inspections...Mark

Inspections have failed time again, too much room for criminal activity. In NY I had to pay under the table to pass inspection. When I moved to Florida, I was held hostage by the inspection laws, which were found to be so corrupt. In NY they would put a new car on the exhaust machine and issue me a inspection sticker on my old heap for a price. While I watched old NYC busses rolling down the street spewing black toxic fumes.~JJ~

Is the new law for trailers only? or do cars need to be inspected?

Anything that is registered through the DMV. With a few exceptions.

My local garage does Federal trailer inspections....but do not even have the stickers for state. I did Federal (which supercedes state) at $45 a pop for a cow/horse/boat and equipment trailer. The owner who is a good friend said he didn't even know it was required and the federals they do are mainly for big trucks and power company stuff. A real load of crap...they require it but do not even teach it at the inspection certification schools.

Folks, as I understand it. Any inspection station that does motor cycles can do a boat trailer. Taylor Automotive here in Sanford did mine.

Thats right, motorcycle and boat trailers use the same inspection sticker. Anywhere that does motorcycles should be able to inspect trailers.

Shag,
It is in Chapter #20 Motor Vehicles / it is pretty much any trailer that has a TOTAL weight of 4'000 Lb. or more, that is also when brakes kick in , you must have brakes on the trailer to be inspected . I took mine to a trucking company by the Quarry the H-D shop here would not do it, there is a couple threads on it when we were fighting the trailer fight, I can find them if you would like me too. Here is a copy :

Part 2. Safety and Emissions Inspections of Certain Vehicles.

§ 20-183.2. Description of vehicles subject to safety or emissions inspection; definitions.

(a) Safety. – A motor vehicle is subject to a safety inspection in accordance with this Part if it meets all of the following requirements:

(1) It is subject to registration with the Division under Article 3 of this Chapter.

(2) It is not subject to inspection under 49 C.F.R. Part 396, the federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.

(3) It is not a trailer whose gross weight is less than 4,000 pounds or a house trailer.

(a1) Safety Inspection Exception. – Historic vehicles, as defined in G.S. 20-79.4(b)(55), shall not be subject to a safety inspection pursuant to this Article.

(b) Emissions. – A motor vehicle is subject to an emissions inspection in accordance with this Part if it meets all of the following requirements:

(1) It is subject to registration with the Division under Article 3 of this Chapter, except for motor vehicles operated on a federal installation as provided in sub-subdivision e. of subdivision (5) of this subsection.

(2) It is not a trailer whose gross weight is less than 4,000 pounds, a house trailer, or a motorcycle.

(3) It is a 1996 or later model.

(4) Repealed by Session Laws 1999-328, s. 3.11, effective July 21, 1999.

(5) It meets any of the following descriptions:

a. It is required to be registered in an emissions county.

b. It is part of a fleet that is operated primarily in an emissions county.

c. It is offered for rent in an emissions county.

d. It is a used vehicle offered for sale by a dealer in an emissions county.

e. It is operated on a federal installation located in an emissions county and it is not a tactical military vehicle. Vehicles operated on a federal installation include those that are owned or leased by employees of the installation and are used to commute to the installation and those owned or operated by the federal agency that conducts business at the installation.

f. It is otherwise required by 40 C.F.R. Part 51 to be subject to an emissions inspection.

(6) It is not licensed at the farmer rate under G.S. 20-88(b).

(7) It is not a new motor vehicle, as defined in G.S. 20-286(10)a. and has been a used motor vehicle, as defined in G.S. 20-286(10)b., for 12 months or more. However, a motor vehicle that has been leased or rented, or offered for lease or rent, is subject to an emissions inspection when it either:

a. Has been leased or rented, or offered for lease or rent, for 12 months or more.

b. Is sold to a consumer-purchaser.

(8) It is not a privately owned, nonfleet motor home or house car, as defined in G.S. 20-4.01(27)d2., that is built on a single chassis, has a gross vehicle weight of more than 10,000 pounds, and is designed primarily for recreational use.

(c) (Effective until October 1, 2008) Definitions. – The following definitions apply in this Part:

(1) Emissions county. – A county listed in G.S. 143-215.107A(c) or designated by the Environmental Management Commission pursuant to G.S. 143-215.107A(d) and certified to the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles as a county in which the implementation of a motor vehicle emissions inspection program will improve ambient air quality.

(2) Federal installation. – An installation that is owned by, leased to, or otherwise regularly used as the place of business of a federal agency.

(c) (Effective October 1, 2008) Definitions. – The following definitions apply in this Part:

(1) Electronic inspection authorization. – An inspection authorization that is generated electronically through the electronic accounting system that creates a unique nonduplicating authorization number assigned to the vehicle's inspection receipt upon successful passage of an inspection. The term "electronic inspection authorization" shall include the term "inspection sticker" during the transition period to use of electronic inspection authorizations.

(2) Emissions county.

(3) Federal installation. – An installation that is owned by, leased to, or otherwise regularly used as the place of business of a federal agency. (1965, c. 734, s. 1; 1967, c. 692, s. 1; 1969, c. 179, s. 2; cc. 219, 386; 1973, c. 679, s. 2; 1975, c. 683; c. 716, s. 5; 1979, c. 77; 1989, c. 467; 1991, c. 394, s. 1; c. 761, s. 7; 1993 (Reg. 4/0, thanks a bunch for the info.

It looks like my two are exceptions as I don't have brakes nor do I think I am over 4,000 gross. (Unless I pack for vacation in the boat ). I was legal on the width issue too but did what I could to help the guys who were fighting to get the law changed and will do the same if y'all want to try and get the inspection laws changed.

Gaston's garage in Apex inspected my trailer and packed the wheel bearings. The owner grew up near Carolina Beach and knows his way around boats. They seem to be good people.

O.K. I have read both inspection threads and have a headache, I have a tandem axle trailer rated for 10,0000# carrying cap. Do I need a state or fed. inspection and is there anywhere in Brunswick county I can get it done?

I just got my new tag a month ago. Do I need to get the inspection to be legal or just get it before I renew the tag. I am pulling to Ocracoke next month and want to have this crap in line. I have no problems with width(8.5 beam and removable guides).

Yea, glad I have the permanent plates on mine too!

Gman, you need state inspection if the boat and trailer together actually weigh over 4K lbs. That's scale weight of the combo, not just what the trailer is rated to carry. I think if your combo weighs over 10K lbs, you need the federal inspection done.

I'm waiting for a call back from DMV telling us where we can find a list of the trailer inspection stations in NC. Or at least a person there to call that knows what they're talking about.

FYI, it changes as of 11/01/2008. They're going to electronic issue. So any NC inspection station can do the trailer inspections at that point. Now whether all those stations know that or not is a different story.
