Default Relocating to Wilmington, NC

Hello everyone, I am FINALLY getting out of California and will be transferring to Wilmington, NC very soon. Wondered if local residents could/would make recommendations on neighborhoods and schools in the area. Have 3 kids with the oldest just starting kindergarten but we are concerned about quality all the way through high school as we are hoping to stay. Prefer public schools. So far looks like Hoggard is the preferred high school. Have read/heard good things about Holly Tree, Ogden, Paisley (sp?) Elem.

Would like family friendly neighborhood with a little space to breathe (haven't done that since landing in CA). Looks like Masonboro, Monkey Junction, Silver Lake areas are decent. I will actually be working in Acme/Riegelwood area, so are there other areas I should be looking at that are a reasonable commute? Leland looks nice, but I am concerned about the schools.

Of course, I'm looking forward to getting on here lasking for boat recommendations, fishing partners, secret hot spots, etc.... But first things first for now.

Thanks in advance for the replies.

Regards,
Jason

Magnolia Greens and Brunswick Forrest. In Leland, just outside of Wilmington. Nice homes going cheap in a soft market, and closer to Riegelwood. Plus, you will not have to deal with the bridge traffic into Wilmington if you are already on that side. Hope this helps.

Monkey Junction & Myrtle Grove is where we're from. =) Nice affordable housing there. Quiet neighborhoods, kids playing in the the streets most afternoons & weekends. If you lived in MJ, I think your kids would go to Williams Elem, Myrtle Grove Middle, & Ashley High (?). Forest Hills Elem is my #1 pick for best elem school in Wilmington. Forest Hills is an old, wealthy community in the center of the city pretty much. The school, teachers, and curriculum are great! Middle schools are a toss up for me. Hoggard is my husband's alma mater & the best two high schools I've been to are Hoggard & New Hanover. I wouldn't recommend Laney Middle or High. Parsley Elem is cool too - there are some really attractive houses & quiet neighborhoods on Masonboro Loop Rd. =)

I live off of Pine Grove which turns into Masonboro Loop rd. Our kids went to Holly Tree, Roland Grise and Hoggard. They both did very well. The key to the school system is to get your kids in the advanced classes so when they get to high school they will be in classes with other kids that want to learn. This worked with ours. The area is a good area to live in and if you are working days in Rieglewood then your commute will be OK as you will be going against the heavy traffic. If you need any information pm me and I will be glad to try to help.

ynot fishing,
I was looking at Ogden, more specifically within the perimeter of Middle Sound Loop rd. closer to the coast. How is this area?

We relo'd here a couple years ago and live in the MJ area. We're in the Bellamy, Myrtle Grove & Ashley district and these schools are decently ranked. Nice Marina near by: Mansonboro Yacht Club has wet & dry slips available. Not far to Masonboro Inlet... maybe alittle more than 3 miles. Haven't been annexed... YET and hope it stays that way! Lots of development hear and value should only get better. Traffic just depends on where your going... but you can always find traffic
Good luck with you relo.

Want to say thanks to everyone for their replies. Just spent my first day in the area shopping and saw 17 homes, mostly around the Masonboro Loop and down to Monkey Junction. Tomorrow we head out to Ogden and Hampstead. Feels great being back in NC. Amazingly sold our house in CA yesterday, so now the pressure is on. BUT looks like we'll be spending Thanksgiving here. YEEEEHAWW!

Don't know what you are looking for, but I know there are some lots for sale in the middle sound area with boat slips. I have one in a neighborhood called Register Place. 24 foot boat slip with lift, .6 acre lot. I do not have children, but I hear Ogden Elementary is great. We bought the lot for that reason, but are looking to move now. We have to sell it first. It is the cheapest in the neighborhood at $345,000 Call if you have any questions. 910 520 3794
