Re: need to know some fishing spots and bait in charleston, sc for fishing trip sept 1-8,2008
i suggest staying out of the water on memorial day. too many idiots on the water to fish, and the landings are insane. go to a tackle shop and get a "hot spot" chart. it'll show all the places anyone will share.

Yep, bunch of 'em......we get a lot of tourists too!
Surf fishing will produce bass, whiting, sharks. Folly River area will produce bass, trout, flounder, sheeps, whiting, black drum, sharks. Nearshore (wrecks/reefs/LB) will produce kings, spadefish, sheeps, sharks. Offshore (wrecks/reefs/LB) will produce the same with some black bass, grouper, triggerfish, snapper, etc. Dolphin are spotty, wahoo at the ledge. Check charlestonfishing.com and watch the jellyfish, they're thick now. Crosby's Seafood has a pier, great fresh seafood, and fresh veggie stand. Haddrels Point tackle at South Windemere Shopping Center is a must visit for tackle/info./etc.

Thanks REELESCAPE1 for the info.I hope the weather stay calm enough so we can get some fishing in while we are down in charleston.Ive fished in the jetties two times about two years ago and caught whiting, sheepheads, a couple sharks, blues and a couple black sea bass.I just found out the reds are hitting good.I hope they are still out there hitting like Ive heard they was when we get down there the first week of september.I would rather like to find some inshore spots to fish that are productive. I see these fisherman dont really be wanting to give out no fishing spots.Well thanks for the info you are greatly appreciated.

where do you plan to put in at???
There are a few good spots around CHS to fish... just depends on what type of fishing you are looking for... sheeps, reds, troutsies, or nearshore stuff, it depends.

Re: need to know some fishing spots and bait in charleston, sc for fishing trip sept 1-8,2008
Grillage can get you some nice reds, or a a few sharks... if you go up the ICW towards the IOP bridge, just before the bridge there is a creek to the left... reds are there almost always on rising and falling tides... just use mullet or mudders on the bottom, or shrimp under a popping cork.
The old trussel over at the opening of the Cooper is a good sheepshead spot for inshore sheeping... also, the Ben Sawyer, or the IOP bridge is good, as well. If you don't have fiddlers don't worry... pick a few oysters off the pilings and use them for bait... they love those things and will eat 'em as fast as you can shuck 'em.
If you come over to the Wando to play, at the mouth of Nowell Creek are a few troutsies... near bout any creek off the Wando above the 526 is game for troutsies...

The grillage: Leaving the harbor, just before the rocks, there's a bouy on the left near the shore. Watch your depth finder go from 80 feet to 20 feet, that's the grillage. You'll see many other boats anchored up there. You'll need a ridiculous amount of weight to keep your bait on the bottom when the tide is moving. Big big big fish there, pretend you are going marlin fishing. Leave your zebco at home.
Putting in at shem creek, there are plenty of spots real close. Going left out of the creek, you'll see a bunch of docks on your left on the edge of the channel. All of them can hold trout, flounder, redfish, and stingrays, best on an incoming tide.
Continue on along the channel and you have a choice to keep going straight to the Grillage, or turn left into the ICW behind Sullivan's Island.
As Drum Reaper mentioned, if you go into the ICW, you'll get to the Sawyer bridge, a big swing bridge. Use live bait on a cork around the bridge poles for trout. Better fishing when the tide is moving in either direction.
Past the bridge, on both your left and your right, there are miles of a network of little tidal creeks you can troll grubs for trout and flounder and scattered docks here and there you should cast at for redfish at higher tide stages.
So, depending on what the tides are doing as you leave Shem Creek, hit all these spots up in order of what the tide is doing.
On your way back in to Shem Creek, if you want "one more cast", spend a little time fooling around at the big creek mouth just inside Shem on your left, coming back in.
And also, as Drum Reaper said, stop in at Haddrells point for some local pointers and to stock up on what's hot. I suggest you don't bring your boat to their parking lot unless you want a headache. Stop in the day before you go and talk shop. Tell them Capt Fritz sent you there for the best info in Charleston.
Some people mentioned charlestonfishing dot com, but another good local site is pelagicnavigator dot com but you have to sign in to read, it's not as open and public as CF. But the info is just as good, if not better. Alot of the same captains and users participate on both sites.
