On my way to Big 10 (track was from Beaufort Inlet to Big 10) yesterday I passed a tall "can" buoy about 10 miles from Big 10 very close to my port side.
Never seen that before. Anybody know what the deal is with that buoy?

You're not talking R6 are you? That's pretty close to the track from BI to big 10. But that's been there forever. I assume you're talking about a new buoy?
I'm down all week. If I make another trip to Big 10, I'll make sure I take a closer look. My wife and I were at a loss when we saw it too. I guess there's a chance that it was a temporary R6 buoy...but I didn't show on my chartplotter (and I think saw R6 before we got to the "mystery" buoy anyway).

We got a late start on Sunday morning. We decided to bottom fish at Big 10. Got a few undersized sea bass. We then decided to pick up and run to 14 buoy in search of Trigger Fish. We did manage to catch two Triggers. Then we headed home around 4pm. Beautiful ride back

I think I saw that same buoy back in may. It didn't show up on my chartplotter either. I thought that it might be the knuckle buoy or something else that might have dragged it's anchor. We were headed back from the 14 to nw places when we saw it..

Was it a yellow can?
Several of the AR buoys went "missing" this winter.
I dive on Big 10 a lot and run that line a bit. I haven't seen it.
Yellow cans mark the AR's. It could be a runaway buoy or a new AR. I know they had some "cooking" that did not have buoys and were not public knowledge while they studied them for a while.
One way to find out is to contact NCDMF. Fellows name is Jim (spelling of his last name escapes me) and he is a really nice guy. He runs the Onslow Bay AR program. I met him at a fundraiser at the aquarium.
No. That's buoy is on the offshore side of Big 10. I was on a track from the Beaufort Inlet to Big 10. I encountered the buoy about 500 yards to my port side about 10 miles from Big 10 (which is a few miles shy of NW Places #1).

Interesting. My son and I were out of Topsail today and went right by where the AR 368 buoy is supposed to be and there was nothing but ocean. Perhaps it "drifted" 50-60 miles north? :-)
It could have been a buoy that drifted from its home. I really should have stopped and taken a closer look. The water was so slick that day, I was really enjoying the 45mph ride.
