The first bill to be sent to be introduced just came out this morning. We will be expecting 2-4 bills for introduction on the boat towing issue. These bills will be up review and then possibly whittled down to one bill. It will be interesting to see what the others will look like. Once we get the bill or bills that will be introduced we will need to get back on the letter sending campaign to get it passed. We will have another form letter ready when this happens. Please read the bills ...Mark

Senator Boseman.
Referred to:
A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT to INCREASE the width of boats that may be transported on the primary highway routes during the day and night with a permit and to increase the width of boats and trailers that may be transported or hauled on a primary highway route with a permit during the daylight hours only.
The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts:
SECTION 1. G.S. 20-116 is amended by adding a new subsection to read:
"(m) Notwithstanding any other provision of this section, the towing of any boat or boat trailer in excess of 102 inches wide shall require a permit to be issued pursuant to the requirements of G.S. 20? 9;119. With a properly issued permit, the towing of any boat or boat trailer in excess of 102 inches wide but less than 121 inches wide may take place on any day of the week, including weekends and holidays, and may take place at night. With a properly issued permit, the towing of any boat or boat trailer in excess of 120 inches wide may take place on any day of the week, including weekends and holidays, but shall not take place at night."
SECTION 2. This act is effective when it becomes law.
It would also be nice if it had some verbeage like " Guide posts, lights, reflectors, or other safety devices shall not be considered in the 102" measurement provided that the 102" requirement is not exceeded by more than 6".

It would be even nicer if that 6" included more than just guideposts.
It would be nice to see some secondary roads added. If not how can you get to or from the water.I know some marinas and ramps are on primary roads, but alot are on secondary roads.I don,t think everyone stays on a primary route.
Thank you for your e-mail regarding boat towing issues in North
Carolina.
Yes, we are aware of the recent boat-towing issues and asked our
Research Department for their comments and direction. The State
Highway Patrol's response on this issue is also attached.
An increase in allowable widths for recreational boats and boat trailers
is expected to be introduced and considered during the current short
session.
I hope this information is helpful.
Best regards,

Maybe Boylan's info will get us something, as all I saw in the others was asking that you can tow "with" a permit on weekends, night, etc. Thats progress, but whats needed is to simply classify the trailers as recreational and forget the permit requirement. Hopefully more to come that will eliminate the 102" as well as allow 24/7 towing.

AN ACT to INCREASE the width of boats that may be transported on highway routes during the day and night with and without a permit, Change the fee for an annual permit for recreational boats and trailers, and change the penalty for permit violations.

Libra, what has McKee done to support boaters?? Have you talked with them? I'm trying to find out what the various mfgs. have done to support boaters on this. May just post what I find on here, just so boat owners know if their mfgs are doing something to help out their owners. I know Parker, Grady and Regulator have been involved and were at the Wilmington meeting. I know of one mfg. that is very much affected by this issue, but seems to have not done anything at all to help.

I saw the Southport and Onslow Bay guys at the Wilmington meeting as well as the ones above. Also quite a few dealers too. All of them I talked to were extremely concerned and said they were doing everything they could to help us boaters out.
The second bill looks a little better with the night time provision. I am sure one will come around with most/ all of what we have asked for...hopefully if keep calling our legislators!?!?!
ALB is right . We need to keep this on our legislators minds until we get a bill passed that addresses the problems at hand. I know that JB and others have spent countless hours on this but everyone needs to take the time to continue this battle. This should be a concern for anyone that tows or owns a boat. Lets keep this moving foward.....Mark
I really don't know how involved McKee has been in this so far. I do know that they are concerned but didn't ask them how active they were in getting the laws changed.
