Just thought I would get some input from you Carolina guys.
I am looking to move from the Northeast in the next year or so.
I really want to move somewhere on the Carolina shore.
Either North or South Carolina.
I have 3 young kids and need to be located somewhere that has great schools and a very low crime rate.
I want to live as close to the shore as possible...
I own a business that can be moved without to much trouble..
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated...

ah.. there's hundreds of miles of coast line from the obx to savanna. I live in Atlantic beach NC so if you have any questions about the mid coast of NC (especially Carteret county) I might can help. I don't know much about SC though.
I'm in south carolina. It's pretty nice down the coast from Georgetown to Hilton Head/Beaufort. Rural schools are not likely to be good but around urban areas they'll be a lot better. Beaufort comes to mind because it's really nice there , lots of young people around the university, the county is loaded with money since Sun City was built there. And of course there's Hilton Head. I've a friend who just moved to Beaufort, he lives on the water and loves it. There are lots of island communities. Some of the coastal & island communities are wealthy enclaves. Here's some quick tips. Go to a website like epodunk.com and look at the communities of interest. There will be a demographic profile. If you cannot find the area of interest you can go to the South Carolina Division of Research and Statistics/State Data Center and they'll have a lot of information for free. The South Carolina Department of Commerce also has data for communities you can download, they are called Community Profiles and it will detail much about schools and the labor pool. They exist to attract industry here. Much of this data is online. The South Carolina department of education has a downloadable PDF for every school in the state and all schools are rated on the same scale telling you how they compare with others, are they improving or declining,teacher-to-student ratios, etc. I believe DOE also has an Excel spreadsheet you can download to quickly compare schools and school districts.
The only downside is if you are off the beach and around a marsh you have to remember gators or snakes are sometimes around. Also, if your business employs more than a handful of people there are often tax credits for relocating here.

Oak Island ain't bad either. It is the biggest city in Brunswick County and it is right on the beach. It is located at the mouth of the Cape Fear river . Never is there a problem getting into the ocean with a boat . We have 3 boat ramps in different locations . Getting a new bridge in the middle of the Island and new restaurant road . Plenty of community services and groups . In the summer time we have a turtle watch party at night on the beach to watch the baby turtles hatch and run to the water . You have to go to understand . New port coming to Southport the historic city right beside the Island . St James is a big gated community across the waterway . It has a bunch of transplants from Jersey and they are turning it to a little jersey if that is what you are looking for. Lots of children live on the Island . They have parks and a skate park and plans for a new teen center . Just a thought I love it CJ
Just realize, that many of the northerners bring their baggage and arrogance with them and quickly change the face of "paradise". Then, they wonder why the locals look at them with disdain.
Ocean front or beach property is still very costly as are taxes and HO Insurance. If you have the heavy income then Hilton Head is your place, lots of yankees and BS experts. They can tell you how they did it up north and what you need to do. It appears cook has made the point but didain may be a little kind for the a-holes and the johnny o's(ohio) who think every one is in there way and they are the most knowing and self importan.

I have been in Little River, SC part time for past 10 years. Good access to beach and ocean via the Little River Inlet. Can not speak for the school system.

depends on how close you want to be to the water, how close to the gulf stream. Closest point would be Nags Head...then take a look at a map and shore line as you move south towards SC...i.e. same temp water will be 40-50 miles out of morehead but only 25 out of oregon inlet.
lotta factors to look at...undoubtedly you'll have to give up something to get something...good luck...

Ocean and beach front property is pretty expensive, but still pretty reasonable here compared to some other places..... I don't own any, so I can't speak for the taxes & Insurance, but I have no doubt that they are high.
I moved to North Carolina a few years ago, and love it here. You couldn't ask for better weather, the fishing is great, and people are generally pretty easy to get along with as long as you don't say "THIS IS HOW WE DID IT IN _____"
I have been "called to the carpet" a couple of times for what hhi angler mentioned above-saying "this is what we did in Texas" FOR THE RECORD: Sometimes when someone from somewhere else says something like that, it's nothing more than an explanation of why we don't know HOW YOU DO IT HERE!!!
We have our boat down in Morehead City for the Winter & Spring. I've just fallen in love with the area. All the conveniences are nearby, and the people are really friendly. I cannot begin to tell you how many new friends I've made there.
But then again, I consider myself to be laid back and easy to get along with, and feel as if I'm an anomaly in NJ nowadays, anyway.

Ditto on Morehead and Atlantic Beach area. We have had family their for years and I have recently considered moving my own family there. Community is small. It is one of the quickest spots to the bluewater in the nation and schools are supposed to b great. It is, however, a SMALL town in the south. It can take some getting used to but if you grow accustomed to it, you will never look back.
More than likely you will be very disappointed with the public schools down here compared to what you're used to. You might want to factor in the cost of private schools into your budget.
Schools in Carteret County are among the best in the state, where I am K-8 class size averages 10-15. High school may be 20. Theres no need for a private school if youre in the eastern part of CC, thats a fact.
OK......here are my 2 cents on this topic. First I'll deal with hurricanes, because at some point if you move down here you will deal with one. If you do some research on the NWS and historical hurricane tracking sites on the internet, you will see that on the Atlantic coast, the dominant point of impact will be from Charleston north to Cape Lookout. Now that doesn't mean that all the rest of the coast from Savanna to Norfolk hasn't seen hurricane force winds, it just means that the worst winds (landfall) have historically occurred between Charleston and Lookout (Morehead City/Beaufort NC).
As far as schools.........any of the coastal counties of either state have great schools.........all the local taxes from real estate and tourism spending support them. If I remember correctly, Dare County in North Carolina has the highest per capital student spending in the state and excellent student test results to show for it. Dare has built some 4 new schools in the past 5 or 6 years........lots of money going into the local treasurey.
Price may be a bit of a shock if you have not already looked. Try to look for some of the newly developing areas like northeastern NC and the area north and east of Morehead. You can still find waterfront at relatively reasonable costs.
Lastly is the seasons..........North of Hatteras, you will still see distinct seasons, just hardly ever see snow. South of Hatteras (due to the Labrador and Gulf Stream currents) the colder months are 5-15 degrees warmer and seem even moreso as a northeast wind is dominantly down the shoreline rather than dead against it.
Anyway, that's my input. If you have any questions on the interior sounds of northeastern NC, I've lived in this area for my entire life. It's not perfect, but I've never seen anyplace else that I'd rather move to now that I'm retired.
