Default Boat Ramp Closed - Southport Marina

Just a heads up if anyone is going fishing the next few weeks.

Head over to Wildlife- looks like it will be closed for quite a while this time. 2/14/08

Ripping it all out and starting over. Dozers where tearing up the asphalt, old "bait" shop supposed to be moved or lifted Monday. Ramps are to be ripped out and be redone.

Eng's said that the "block and band" system they put in there should have worked. It settled, sunk and washed out in no time. They have had countless pickups that have been stuck on the incline.

I was told yesterday that it will probably be upwards of a month plus before it is ready. I was shown the plans for the marina renovations.

All of the present parking that we have been doing with the trucks and trailers on the right side, coming in, is going to be "gated" parking for marina members only.

They have allocated approximately 15 - 20 parking spots that are going to on the left side of the ramps, in a diagonal direction. There will be approximately 5 parking spots also on the left that will be for autos without boat trailers right down next too the water.

This is the current plan but could change as we all know.

From what you say it sounds as if they are going to make a nice ramp that will be of limited value because people will not have many places to park.

From the looks of it, they are wanting to focus on the marina being the primary source to drive revenue. They are the only game that seems to have room for expansion down the road of any size and they know it.

It has definitely affected the opinion of the locals that have had "the run" of the marina for 30 years and now it won't be considered a "hang out" like it was in the past.

I dropped the boat in Monday at just below mid tide going out and my trailer went off the present ramp on the right one. Both axles dropped off. I would have been screwed if I were trying to pull out instead of splashing.

As it stands now, right ramp ends in between the 3rd and 4th cleat from the end at the dock on the right.

No worries, we still have wildlife ramp, never a problem parking there. :D

If I didn't need a boat set up for diving, I would join the Freedom Boat Club.

5 boats to choose from that are in their own wet slip from 19' to 26' to use as much as you want for $350 a month. That and the fact that your choice is a cuddy, cc, skiff, pontoon or deck boat.

And no, I don't have an affiliation with them, but where else can you have a choice of 5 new boats w/ wet slip, no maint, cleaning, towing, insurance, etc for that kind of money. It is a no brainer.

Oh well, not willing to give up the spear diving.
