I would suggest getting involved with the Raleigh Saltwater Fishing Club. I am not a member (I live in the western part of the state), but you have a wealth of knowledge in your own backyard. A description below:
"The Raleigh Saltwater Sportfishing Club is made up of individuals who are drawn together by the love of saltwater fishing. Our club has over two hundred members. Each month we hold a member meeting, and distribute a newsletter to our membership. Our website is also updated on a regular basis. Most importantly we spend most of our time enjoying our coastal resources and helping our members catch more fish, while practicing conservation and preservation of our marine environment."
Some more advice, don't go out and buy alot of stuff you don't need. Fishing for kings can be pretty straightforward (especially non-tournament). Use standard high speed reels (say 6:1 ratio) on 7' limber tip rods. Use 20lb. test line; tie off to a standard live bait rig (~3' wire then treble hook then 4" wire then another treble "stinger") sold in many tackle stores near the coast, Boater's World (Raleigh has them), Dicks, etc. If you are going to fish dead bait, cigar minnows is especially good. The rig is similar to the one above except that you have a hank brown jig head for the first treble then another treble. The jig head helps keep the "dead" bait from spinning in the water.
For bottom fishing, I would suggest to start out with a combo from Boater's World, usually around $100. Link below:

You can rig with 50lb test line and use this for most any bottom fish. It will bring up Black Sea Bass to Grouper. You can also use this rod to troll for spanish by using planers tied directly to the 50lb line then 30lb test flourocarbon leader tied to a clark spoon (also available at Boater's World or online or at many other tackle stores).
If you have any questions, feel free to ask, there are plenty of knowledgeable people on this board...
Good fishing,
WD
