Default Need Some Equipment suggestions !

A little back ground....

I have been Striper fishing Lake Murray for a while, when I started there was a steep learning curve as far as equipment goes.

It took me a while to find some people who really knew what equipment was right for the target species, thus allot of money was pizzed away to get to where I am at now.

I have gotten the urge to try some salt water fishing this year and need help buying quality equipment the first time.

I think bottom fishing the wrecks and reefs around Charleston will be my first goal. Maybe some trolling as well. I assume this will require different equipment.

This is where you come in.

Boat is a 185 Scout with good electronics.

What rods, reels, line, hooks, ect... would you recommend ??? I am thinking 2 or 4 matching setups if needed.

Thanks in advance for helping a brother out

We use Penn 320gt2 in the bay for both trolling and bottom fishing. The 320's have been throughly used over many years. There are some who say the newer ones are not as good as the older oned made in the USA and they are probably right but they are still a decent reel. Spool them with a spectra around 40# and you will have some good all round rigs. If you need a mono leader just tie on several feet and there you go.

As far as the terminal tackle, it depends on the species being targeted.

By the way, I used to live in Spring Valley and have a few friends on the lake. Is the water finally back up?

Yes the lake is up to normal winter levels, I should be fishing now but they are calling for a little more wind than is enjoyable...

Thanks for the info on the Penn 320's I will check them out. What kind of rods are you using?

Ice cream man,

I am stalking Charleston fishing.com as well.

I'm a big fan of the Shimano Torium 30. It is a. all metal high speed reel 6.4/1 with a smooth drag. I have used mine for everything from 30lb amberjack 50 miles out, kings right off the beach and black sea bass on the reefs. They will be a good all around reel unless you plan on doing a lot of offshore trolling. They run about $180.

As for rods you either have to buy one and compromise a little or buy several to get just what you want. The new butterfly jigging rods are amazing. Super strong very light and not that badly priced, about $90 at BassPro Shop for their brand in 50 to 100 class That may sound like more than you need but trust me and check them out. I fight big AJ’s with them offshore and black sea bass inshore. The only draw back is that they are very limber so they are not well suited for trolling big plugs like a Mann stretch 30.

Thanks for the help, some one else told me that the jigging rods are the way to go.

I plan on fishing two people most of the time. How many rods can one man handle?

I know when I Striper fishin the lake, I fish any where form 7 to 11 lines while slow trolling by my self.

Thanks for the info.

Troy

Just depends on the conditions and the size of the boat. If you have out riggers you can get out more lines with the wider spread. On a good flat day with two people on a 24 foot boat I can do 6 lines on top and two on a downrigger, but thats pushing it. Under normal confitions in 2 to 4 foot seas I do 5 on top and one on the downrigger.
