the hole is an area more than a particular place like a ledge or wreck. There are a lot of different numbers but all are within the area. You will not mark much relief there. These are the numbers I have.

DEAD TREE HOLE 34 38 523 76 37 803

Here's what I have: N34 38.748 W76 35.559

Although for the life of me I can't figure out what differentiates that place from any other random chunk of ocean....

Me either. But there usually is bait holding in there. Maybe something to do with the bottom currents because it's in the area of the hook. Guess I'll add these two to my other numbers for DTH. They all seem to be a little different. I usually just line up the lighthouse and the water tower and I know I'm in the general vicinity. Then ck the sounder.

What differentiates is the proximity to Barden Inlet mostly. There is current that comes via that Inlet and sediment/photoplankton and other such stuff.

Also Beaufort Inlet (just 4-5 miles away) has some influence too.

And, of course, you have to factor in Cape Looout Shoals just a couple of miles away.

Several years ago there was a period where bluefin tuna were being caught in 10 feet of water in the 'HOOK" area (Dead Tree Hole is in that area). And the amazing thing was that boats were catching so many bluefin there that one boat put a bagel on a hook and caught a bluefin....LOL.

On occasion when the water is cold enough, the stripers come in to that area after the menhaden. Hopefully that will happen again since the pogey boats may not be there any more. I hope.

thanks to all for the help I plan to be in Harkers this weekend and though if the weather was bad the BFT might be at this hole eating trout. Looks like the weather will be great so I will go farther out thanks again
