Default Southport BFT 1-5-07

Gonna try to make the trip up from SC to give em a shot this weekend, if the weather holds out.

Was thinking about putting in on Oak Island and heading out towards the frying pan area. Problem is I have never put in there. Is there anything special about traversing the area in the dark?? Anybody want to buddy up and go(i.e.... show me the way)?

Any ideas where the bite might be kicking this weekend?

I'd suggest using the Ramps at SouthPort Marina, I understand that they have been recently overhauled. The marina sits on the waterway, maybe 1,500' from the main ships' channel. If you are running in the dark, this would be my suggestion - get a chart as well. Water is deep, 2 areas of concern; when you leave the marina and get to the main ship's channel, do not short cut the green marker -- its shallow. The channel is deep, Blue bird shoals will be on your right when arriving at the bar but if you remain in the channel you'll be fine.

Good luck and give us a report.

Thanks for the advise Jonafare...Do you happen to know if the marina is open at 4-5am?? Some in SC are and others are not..

You may want to consider putting in at Ocean Isle and going out thru Shallotte Inlet. The ramp at Ocean Isle is under the bridge on the island side and a staright 4 miles from Hwy 17. Depth won't be a problem,

That was the initial plan last week, but isn't that a significantly longer boat ride??
I was hoping to cut the onwater time down..if it's cold it can be brutal in a CC. Thinking about the Tower or maybe the Angle ledge area.. Looks like there are a few nice temp breaks in this area. Anybody else thinking about hitting the BFT this weekend? Weather appears to be holding nicely(fingers crossed).

Lil 2, I doubt that they are open that early. Give them a call, they have nice secure storage for your truck & trailer.

910-457-5701 or 910-457-9900, I think the first number is the dock house.

last week I used the SP ramp and the store was not open at 5. there is a nice C-store in SP before you head to the ramp on the main road that have everything except for bait. I'm headed to MHC for Fri-Monday

Thanks for the info..I'll figure it out this afternoon. Gonna call a few places and see what seems best. Good luck to all. Still looks like the weather may cooperate.

If you follow the channel markers youre good, pass the second bouy outside the Inlet and you can key in the tower and cross the shoals. The spot for the bft has been the fairway bouy. I'ed try there and the horse shoe.

I was under the impression it was Jaybird Shoals at the mouth of the river. I have never heard of a Bluebird Shoals around Southport.

Well...at least it was better than work...

We did have a great time this weekend and the weather and seas was as good as it ever could be other than the frozen everything. Used the public ramps on Oak Island. It was a delightful ride to the water and everyone's advise was deadon. I really appreciate all the advise.

Hope some others found some fish out there, because it was tough treading all around from what I could tell on the radio and at the docks. Did find a few bottom fish to keep us interested but... Man I wish we could've hooked up, was really looking forward to the fresh sushi.
