Heading down to Charleston for a long weekend in April with the wife. Looking for suggestions on places to stay in the downtown area. I have never been but my wife was there a year ago and stayed at The Francis Marion Hotel and said it was ok. Any other suggestions of places to stay within walking distance of good watering hole, restaraunts and attractions?
My wife and I stayed last March for our anniversary at the Vendue Inn. The hotel is in the Battery area, and was great to stay in. In between a hotel and a B&B. Great service, and would highly recommend the hotel. http://www.vendueinn.com/
Vendue is excellent as well as Charleston Place, Market Pavillion, and Andrew Pinckney. All are close to everything. A few blocks further away from everything is the Wentworth Mansion, an excellent hotel with a nice restaurant. If you post a price range and/or activities you are interested in we could be of more help.

Listen to what IOP is telling you, he's dead on the money with those suggestions.
If you stay at the Vendue get a room that is away from the elevator leading to the rooftop. This is a popular night spot and the patrons on the elevator can be quite noisy, trust me I am one of them. If you need restaurant recommendations I'd be happy to make some.
I agree with the suggestions to go with a private place. When you're in a town like Charleston, make the most of it by staying in a historic house, not some chain hotel.
Nobody mentioned Harborview Inn yet. I attended a conference in Charleston a couple of years ago and had reservations to stay at the Harborview. They screwed up my reservation and didn't have a room for me when i got there. They sent me to another hotel, the Best Western and i didn't get a lick of sleep there due to all of the noise from the guests. I had to give a presentation at the conference early the next morning, so i was pretty ticked off. The Harborview called me on my cell later that morning and apologized for the mix-up and offered to have me stay there free for the next couple of nights. I needed sleep so i took them up on the offer. They gave me one of the best rooms in the place with a fireplace, large hot tub, and a king sized four poster bed. The room was right on the water and i had a great view of the harbor and a balcony. So i guess i would still recommend them; even though they screwed up my reservation, they made it right in the end.
