I brought our Bertram 35 down to Morehead City from Cape Charles a few months ago, and delivered a down east boat from Norfolk to Wilmington recently. Its a nice ride down. will PM you a phone number, give me a call if you want.

I'd run it on the outside down from Cape Charles, and then cut through Oregon Inlet, and then run the inside leg through Pamlico Sound. It'll save you about 35 nm that way, as opposed to running it offshore.

I ran our 54 foot Hatteras outside all the way down from Ocean City, but it was at night, and we would have hit Oregon at dead low tide, had we elected to run Pamlico Sound.
