Default I hear the BFT are nearby!!!

Not quite in my back yard yet, but last year they made a strong showing @ the light house rocks, 90/90, Christina's and were spotted at the Jungle right after they showed in N.C. So maybe this weekend they will be spotted here. I plan to go out Sunday and take a look around. Dec.29 of last year, they were herding pogies up against the Frying pan shoals 17 miles out. I plan to dust off the Internationals and get some horse bally's with pink skirts and hope to stumble on just one hungry tuna. Sunday is supposed to be warm! 74 degrees with 2-3's. If I don't spot anything I will run to the ledge for more king's, my freezer is empty and my dog's are wondering what's with the dry food lately. It would be nice to hook a monster for a change. You never know. I heard that the BFT that have been caught so far were loaded with gray trout??? So maybe they are cruising inshore? who know's. Well, I will be on channel 11& 16 all day Sunday. Anyone out, give me a shout. ~JJ~

Pink skirts eh? I always heard the blue and whites were the producers for the BFT's?

Last year, clear and pink seemed to be the big producer's at least around here. From what I have heard. ~JJ~

Don't want to sell mine but i would bring them down if you wanted partner up. Also know lots of guys who would probably sell their set ups reasonable. The fishing up here has sucked the last few years.

I would totally be down for a joint venture. The only thing keeping me from being there as we speak is gear! (Well ... that is other than work, two kids, and a ferocious pregnant wife)

I just blew my wad on the boat and cant afford any significant gear just yet.

There are a ton of fish here apparently. Let me know when youre comin! I may have a few more 130's that will join us from Marblehead.

130's ? Call Brant @ OIFC, they use 50's all day long spooled with 500 yds. of braid then 200 yds. of 130 mono top shot. They have caught some very nice fish on these setups. He had a budget setup using a TLD 50 2 speed on a 5'6 meatstick for the $400.00 buck range. Good luck

They are catching giant bluefin on a 50? I can see that...i caught a 115# tarpon on penn 460 slammer spooled with 17# cajun red topped with a 100# leader while we were drum fishing so anything is possible.

depends what you want to do with the fish, You can catch them on 50's after a while but the longer fight puts a lot of lactic acid the meat and you have to swim the fish a long time to release them or sell them. I would think and 80w would be about a light as I would go in order to get the fish to the boat in prudent amount of time. IMO

There are people on here that know a lot more than me about it but I have heard of fish being caught just as fast on these rigs as with the larger reels. The few I have been involved with came to the boat pretty quick because we fought from the bow of a outboard powered boat and got straight up and down on the fish pretty quick.
When you get to the 130 top shot and go to low gear on a 2 speed TLD or International you can turn up the drag and make pretty good time. If I can quote one of the guys at the fishing center, it is not about the drag system ,it is about line capacity. The 50's have the drag to handle the fish and the braid gives you the extra line cap.To each his own I just know there have been plenty of them caught on 50's.
You guys go catch em up.

The difference in NC Bluefin fishing and that up North is these NC fish are in shallow water. There is no sounding in deep water, a 50 will do just fine!

No way a fifty will work with a 500lb BFT. The rods don't have the backbone to lift that size fish I don't care how shallow you are fishing. You know they do catch Bluefin up north In water less than 100 ft deep. I don't see any of the commercial guys here fishing anything less than 80s.
