Default Outer Banks Vacaction advice needed please

Looking to rent a large home in the Outer Banks area June or July '08 for one week. Must have 5+ bedrooms. No dock needed. $$$$ not an issue. I have never been to this area but it is 1/2 way between Fla where one half of the family lives and NJ where the other half lives.

Questions:

1) Is this a great place for kids and adults to vacation?
2) Is there good inshore/offshore fishing this time of year?
3) Is there a better place to go within 200 miles?

Any advice or leads would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I would say you can't pick a better spot based on kids/adults with fun things to do and yes, offshore fishing is very good that time of year.

I would look in Nags head/Kill Devil hills/Kitty Hawk if you like convenience...if you want to drop more money, try Duck or Corolla. If you want more quiet, think south of Oregon Inlet like ROdanthe, Salvo, Hatteras, etc...

Try www.villiagerealty.com. A lot of super houses down there for rent. Village of Nags head is very nice...golf, sound or ocean views, etc...

If you want to fish offshore, recommend you try and book the Pointrunner but book him early.

My wife and I have gone to the OBX for 20 years. Last summer we brought family in from AZ, CO, NE and WI. They loved Rodanthe. Make sure you get a house with a pool to rinse the kids after a day at the beach. I recommend Oregon Inlet south to Hatteras but it is much more remote than Nags Head. Less people too.

Ocracoke is a great place, but it might be a little to remote for you. I went in Oct, and you should have seen all the surf fishing junkies around there.

For Oregon Inlet to Hatteras Inlet, Outer Beaches Realty has a ton of listings for the mini-motels. 4-5 master suites, pool, pool table, elevator, hot tubs etc, etc, etc.

Pretty good search engine to narrow down your choices: http://www.outerbeaches.com/

More chit Nags Head North but way more people & congestion in the summer.

I live here, if you have specific questions I will be glad to help. I have some contacts with rental agencies that I could recommend and would be glad to share those with you. I would recommend Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills or Kitty Hawk. That way your kinda central so you can go North and South for day trips.

GREAT offshore fishing that time of year, if you have your own boat or you can find a charter. Inshore and surf will be good too.

As far as kids go there are numerous things to do but no big theme parks if that's what your looking. Williamsburg, VA is the closest and it's about 2.5 hrs. Busch Gardens and Water Park.

I would rate OBX as EXCELLANT to visit. Too many good restaurants to mention, but you have to hit Basnights at least once. Friendly folks, warm water, historical, great fishing, and just a good place to relax! Eric

June is a great time to go to the OBX, I have been taking my family down for going on 15 years now. I have rentedd houses beachfront from Cove realty (check out their website) and never had a complaint. I also met up with Britton Shackleford he owns the DOGHOUSE a custom carolina built sportfisher. He always manages to get on a load of fish me, he is located in Wanchese at Broad Creek marina. He also has a website www.doghousesportfishing.com I'm sure you'll do well with him if you decide to go offshore. South Nags Head is a great location as it's not too far from all the eateries and stores.

Dont forget the South Side if you dont mind a little slower pace. Atlantic Beach is a welcome change of scenery from the busy banks. Beautiful beach... some of the best fishing in the world. Home of the Big Rock Blue Marlin tourney. Experience of a lifetime esp. if money is no object

The place is horrible, as a matter of fact all of NC beaches are terrible. The fishing is terrible, the people are rude and the food is bad. It does nothing but rain and the wind blows 25-30 out of the northeast all the time. Stay away.

D*&N Yankees.

Guys,

All the suggestions are great! 5-6k really gets you a killer house for a week! I have been in contact with several agencies and they have been very helpful. One more question for the board. This is a family vaca so the hatteras/frisco areas will definitely work. My sister got a recommendation to stay in the Duck or corolla areas? Any thoughts?

I use a site called vrbo.com to promote a canalfront rental I have in Marathon (www.vrbo.com/70014). I would check out www.vrbo.com because you are dealing direct with the owner. Most of the time I can give 10 percent off the posted rates if I book it direct without an agent/realtor.

Hope this helps, Jim
