Note: Word from OIFC is the kings are going crazy @ the atlantic ledge, So I might have to make the 30 mile run to the ledge. I will decide after I jig some bait at 90/90~JJ~

I cant wait until I know where the hell you guys are talking about!!! All these names for these spots are like German to me. I guess that comes with time. I guess those are the dues you pay as a newbie
Kings seem to be heating up pretty good. We pulled of a couple days this week out of Morehead. Bite here has been decent but Hatteras and Southport guys seem to have a much better bite right now. Oh well, got to see how the new boat does on the hook overnight.
Atlantic Beach / Morehead. Just started getting out on my own. I have been on other peoples boats for the last 10 years so I haven neede to know where I was going! I am used to grabbing the ritual 5 am beer, putting on my hoodie and settling in for the ride
Now that I have my own boat .... I wish I paid attention.
I am headed out this weekend. I am hoping I only need to find my way back to the inlet where the albies are going nuts!
I did well at the ledge, water temp was 67.8 Only fished from 2 till 4 pm had 4 kings in the boat high teens and low twenties. Lost a bunch to bite offs. I might increase my wire size next time out. Water temp @ the inlet was only 60-61. So I knew I would have to run out pretty far to find a good temp. Water temp at 90/90 was 63.4 and it was dead there. Water temp at little river offshore reef was 64 or so. Caught cigars jigging right on top of the buoy, then headed to the ledge. So it looks like the kings are heading out to warmer waters. Next trip I plan to head straight to the offshore reef get bait early @ day break, then get a full day at the ledge and see what happens. ~JJ~

Mike its not what you are doing wrong, it's where you are fishing. The kings like it 68- 78 They don't like cooler waters. They typically stay in their comfort zone, where ever thats at. I was getting kings a few weeks ago right outside the inlet. the water was alot warmer then. Follow the temp and look for structure or live bottom and bait and you will find the fish. I stopped chumming because of all the sharks, And I run my downrigger down around 30-40 feet some times the kings are deep as well. I will run it just off the bottom if 30-40 doesn't get a strike. Or if the flat lines aren't doing anything. Good luck~JJ~

LittleTooth, get yourself a chart of Long bay, All the known fishing holes are on there. Jungle, Fryingpan tower, AR's 90/90 Christina etc. Also go to Fryingpan.com and look at the surface temp maps you can zoom in on anywhere in long bay and learn alot from studying the maps.~JJ~

Thanks! Will do.
Additionally, I just need to go out with my father in law a few times. He has been fishing here since he was in the womb so he will hook me up with all the hot spots too.
Question, what's the preferred temp for kings? Based on the SST it appears the shoe might cool down here shortly.
This time of the year temp isnt as important as bait. You will find fish in cooler water in the fall than in the spring and I dont know exactly why but its just a pattern I've seen. For example you will find kings around the tower through dec. even when the water is in the low 60's but they really like the 69 area...you blame em?? They will hold out past the tower the remainder of the winter.
