First of all, I love those St Croix rods. I have wanted them for a long time but just have had a hard time pulling the trigger with the price tag on them. I might have to go ahead with the Albacore motivation. So much fun. I know the baits that you were using although I forget who makes them. Great to throw at a lot of fish. Were the ones you used scented?

When I was out there they were EVERYWHERE! When I was hooked up there was not another boat within 100 yards of me. It was nuts. I am going to try and make it out again this weekend with some decent tackle and see if I can find them again.

What leader do you use when after these pesky little guys?

Hey LT,

The soft plastics we were casting were not scented. Still can't remember the name of them. As for the leader, we had a maybe a two foot long bimini twist, then another two to three foot long single 30lb florocarbon leader tied to the lure with a loop knot. This rig held up fine for the entire day.

Were they Yamamoto? Color? THanks for the leader info. Can you cast braid at them without a leader or should you swivel some clear fluorocarbon to the bait?

I'm really not the expert, as that was my first time going after those fish. We used a couple colors. I used a black over clear, with some iridescent reflective stuff inside the plastic bait. My buddy used a light copper color. I out caught him 3-1. I don't think they were Yamamotos. I looked on his site and didn't see what we used. Our guide, Capt. Gary Dubiel, of Spec Fever Charters, said that DOA grubs would work as well. I think you want something pretty flashy to get the Albies attention.
I imagine you could cast straight braid at them, but these fish run pretty hard and I'd think you'd want something with a little stretch in the line. There's no question about when they strike, and setting the hook is a non issue. I wouldn't use a swivel, just tie the leader straight to the braid. However, I did get a lot of line twist from the long runs the fish took. I don't quite understand that, because the lures didn't spin on retrieve.

Anybody seen if they are still out there? I will be heading out this weekend to try and track them down for some more drag abuse :~)

I found out that we used Tsunami split tail lures. I used the black back mullet color, and my pal used the redfish color, both in 4 inch size. I imagine they are still out there. I heard they should be around well into December.
