It's been that way for the last 10 years. Not the place to speed antime. The stretch from Plymouth to Columbia is not as bad now since the road has been widened and the speed limit raised.

Its also a training area for new troopers.

They're on a mission. The same mission as the locals in Dillon, SC.
That mission is to intercept as money as possible before it can reach any of the beaches. And to confiscate any money that happens to excape the beaches and is trying to get back mone, wherever that may be.
The locals in Dillon have been doing that for years. Been pretty lucrative over the years too.

RE: Beware of the speed limit east of Columbia, NC on HWY 64
Been nabbed in that exact spot about 3 years ago - headed east on 64 just coming out of Columbia at about 11pm. Didn't see one trooper anywhere before or after. I was running 70.
They do make it nice and convenient for you though. When I got back from the beach I had no fewer than 4 letters from lawyers in the area offering their assistance.
Was just dumb on my part - usually I try to stay with the pack, just a bit behind. It was a little late that night and no one else on the road. Oh well...live and learn - it won't happen to me again (at least right there.)

I have traveled that road once a week for years and have had no tickets yet......I religiously use my cruise control. Some yahoo with Ohio tags always passes me at 80 and gives me the stink eye. I usually see him further up the road with the drill sargeant at his window. It is very hard to go from 70 mph to 35 in Columbia then up to 55 from there to Manns Harbor. Watch out for the patrol officers on the right before you get to Whites. Goes from 55 to 40 there...

they got me earlier this year for 75 in a 55. I was towing my boat to Hatteras and it was 2am. The speed limit changes a good ways before you get into town. I was still speeding regardless. The trooper was pretty nice though, he could have gave me a 75 in a 45. I believe I had 5 or 6 letters from lawyers and I think it cost me 450.00 to get out of it.

Tyrrell County is one of the poorest ($ wise) in the state. Speeding tickets is one of it's main sources of income. I got a ticket on that stretch about 3 years ago. Another bad place now is where HWY 64 goes from 70 mph to 55 mph coming into Columbia.....I see cars stopped there almost everytime I go by. I think I paid 200 bucks to some lawyer there and never heard about it again (70 in a 55).
Re: Beware of the speed limit east of Columbia, NC on HWY 64
If you run 60 or less, no problem. If you go 61+, you may as well have your wallet out on the seat. As you drive that stretch, take a look on either shoulder at the doughnut tire marks..........that's the trooper or sherrif car wheeling around to put some more money in the Tyrrell coffers! Aslo, be careful on the drop in speed limit coming into Columbia from the west.........70 to 55 to 35 in about half a mile.
