Made it to A.B. with no drama. Came 40 to 24 through Jacksonville and hardly even noted a suspicious eye. I did almost end up in Camp Lejeune with my boat by mistake though Can you say strip search?

SquidWilm and Cuzz:

Anything from Rube or Basnight? Or both??

This topic has been beat to death.

I personally smell the stink of insurance companies all over this topic.

I think if I paid my insurance company another $50.00 a year and declared that I towed the boat and trailer they cover already, I bet this would get resolved and relieve me of all this stupid red tape and confusing bull $H#$!

Figured you guys were all over this??????

I'm 100 percent legal on my weighted tags which cost me anually very dearly at 19,000 pounds combined weight. AND, I have a class B liscense which takes me to 26,000 for me to operate.

BUT!!! oops, when I go down any road for any distance pulling my "wide load" boat trailer that's about 9 feet wide, I'm not legal in NC without another permit and more cost?

God forbid that I'm pulling that wide boat trailer (irrigardless of weight) across certain roads or during certain time of day or night!

I'd really like to be legal on the width thing as well, but the wide load thing and laws has me completly confused for boats here in NC.

I honestly believe the NC authorities could legally ticket me for being too wide if I pulled my trailer from my ramp to my house (a distance of about two miles.)

What does the State of NC want me to do? Do I need to apply for an annual wide load permit that covers only the two roads from the ramp to my house? Do I need to place banners and/or lights on my boat trailer announcing that I'm pulling a load over 8'-6"?

Been doing this overwide trailer boat thing for more years across many states and more miles than most on this forum can even count.

Some of the States were TN, NC, VA. FL, GA, SC, AL and further.

Somebody please tell me how I can be legal if pulling a boat trailer that is definately wider than 8'-6" in my home state of NC!

Look guys... NC has the MOST conservative laws on trailering in the US. Their max. trailer height, trailer length, and towing speed are the lowest in the nation in addition to what you have posted. It's ridiculous consideringt he number of boaters who elect the officials who pass the laws.

And to think people thought I was silly to look for a boat with the 8.5 width beam and under 10,000 fully loaded. Everyone said I was overreacting.

Its not just your boat!! If your guides are over 8'6" you are illegal as well. Do you know if I extend my mirrors of my F250 this puts my truck over 8'6" therfore could be considerd a wide load??? Mark

Oh boy... what a crock. Just fully read the rules and the chart depicting the stages of oversized (width) regulations. Talked with someone at DOT Permits and according to the rules anything over 8'6", at the widest point on the trailer requires a permit that costs $100.00 per year. The catch is this.... She could not tell me the towing llimitations, i.e., days, sunrise/sunset, etc. Also there may be a requirement for flags up to 10'-1" width, as well. All of this is outlined on your permit and the permit is required if your traveling on NC roads daily, or for 1 mile. Boats fall into non-divisible general commodity. The same category that controls construction equipment, farm equipment, sealed ship containers, and on and on and on. State of registration of tow vehicle does not apply. So, I guess it is conceivable that travelling from the old north state to Florida, you may have to have 4 different permits, depending on the rules of neighboring states.
