A lot of us use Excel to keep a master log of waypoints and this format is also easy to share. So, how do you get way points from Excel into a format your GPS can use?
First of all, make sure your spreadsheet has the following column headers in this order:
1: Name (required)
2: Description (optional)
3: Latitude (required)
4: Longitude (required)
5: Symbol (optional, ex. fishing area, waypoint, reef, ship wreck)
Be sure the file is saved once you are done.
Next, in Excel, click on File Save As and in the file type drop down, select Comma Separated Values (CSV) and either use the same file name or enter a new one and click save.
Once the CSV file is created, got to this site:
http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/convert
Click browse and navigate to the CSV file you created.
In the Output Format area, select GPX for the file type. GPX is a universal standard for most all GPSs programs.
In the Plain text delimiter area, select comma.
Click on Convert and wait a few seconds.
You will see a new screen that hopefully says Your data has been converted.
Right click on the file and select Save Target As and save the file to you computer.
The file is actually and XML file and can be opened by most all GPS software programs.
Hope this helps.
