Just saw the forecast for this weekend and I have got to get on the water. I was thinking of headed out from Courthouse Bay and going for grouper around big kings area. Anything else biting out there this time of year, bait??
Greg, Tom??
Temps at Cripple Rock are mid to lower 60's so the king fishing will likely be poor there unless a warmer finger moves in...Bottom fishing is always a good bet in that area. If you need to be closer due to a weather change look a little inshore of Christmas and D buoy....small ledges and small markings on the sounder. Not much going on when I was down last weekend but bottom fishing ought to produce for you. Good luck....my power steering is having a pump replaced...I am dying to get out there, too. Soon.
I still don't have the numbers for cripple rock. I figured that I would try big kings and fish box area since it worked well for the grouper last time I got out in Dec. I may try to net some finger mullet before I head out so I have something live to put down there to try to get them biting.
Cripple Rock....34.02.03 N 77.11.25 W is right at the rock......all around here by about a mile is good.....the fish location always changes but this general area and spend a little time going in widening circles to locate good spots for the day. Although closer...fish pots and big kings at the farthest should be all you need this time of year......and they are in even closer inside D and Christmas. I just lke the whole fish pots/big kings area...and the seas are better to run back from that area usually. Greg
I just plugged in the numbers, Cripple rock is a bit farther out. However, are you saying that the grouper are as close as Christmas rock? That isn't a far run at all. I may stop in and see if Tom is around Friday morning, he always has a good ear for what is going on as well. Thanks for the help I'll post pictures hopefully!!
Crippled Rock is about 6 miles further than Big Kings towards WR-2.....definitely go towards the inshore of D an Christmas ...a mile or so.... looking first (my numbers for this area on the boat but they are just inshore of both these areas in the 40-60' max range maybe) and if you don't see what you like go to Fish Pots. The grouper are definitely in closer than Cripple and Big Kings (but they are out there also).....shouldn't need to go out past the Fish Pots ledge at the farthest. Have Fun!!! and send us a report!!
Shawn, Greg's given you good info. Kings are probably way offshore with this cold weather. If not grouper, there should be some nice black bass at those inshore spots he talked about. If you hit Xmas rock I would also give Honeymoon a try. I beleive if you go as far as fish pots or big kings you'll find some grouper. I'm stuck at home again this weekend.
Get 'em Sean!
post report and pics for us lost souls like Greg & Tom........

Just walked in the door. It was COLD, but I guess you knew that. Sat was a little snotty, stayed in close. Fished Christmas rock, plenty of BSB but no grouper water temp 52 degrees. Today was really nice, fished big kings for a while temp 61 and then pushed out to Cripple rock temp 63. Again out there plenty of BSB, grunts, and Beeliners. Unfortunately I only caught 1 red grouper all weekend. It was a great day out on the water today, you all should have been there.
I posted the pics in the sport fishing forum, Christian caught an octopus too. We also saw a pretty large sun fish out there too, that was pretty cool.

We'll do it up again soon. I made it out to Cripple rock, about 35 miles. I keep stretching my legs little by little. I may even make it to the stream this summer, hopefully with another boat or two along.
