We are going to Ocean Isle next weekend. The company my wife works for has a condo down there that employees can use. It will be our first trip to check it out. Will be down Thursday to Sunday. That is Feb 8 to11
Where are the good places to eat? What else to do if not fishing or
Be sure to visit Ocean Isle Fishing Center, on left after you cross the bridge. Brant or Barrett will give you some good info. There is a restaurant at OIFC, The Giggling Mackeral, that is pretty good place to eat. Try the Grouper Bites.....
Also make the drive down to Calabash, plenty of places to eat. Go to Callahans Gift Store (the wife would enjoy), hang a left at light and go to the waterfront. Decision is which place to eat at, but they are all good.
Twin Lakes at Sunset Beach is the best seafood, but they're closed until Mar 1. I would recommend either Boundary House (1 year old) or Ella's seafood in Calabash. Bagels and sandwiches - Bagels on the Green in Ocean Isle (At the Piggly Wiggly shopping center)
If you like just GREAT cheap homecooked food try JOE'S Bar BQ in Shallotte. Lunch Buffet is terrific @$5.75. All you can eat. IMO the Best pork Bar BQ in the state. Bar BQ is cooked in Whiteville and brought to Shallotte.
Cinelli's and Sharkey's on the island are both good and will probably be open. Giggling Mackeral is closed for the season. Off the island, Roberto's (don't think they're open)between OIB and Sunset Beach and The Purple Onion (breakfast and lunch)in Shallotte (on N Main Street).

Some driving is involved, but I would highly recommend Horry's on SC 9 west of Little River. SC, at the Waccamaw River. Well worth the drive in my opinion. We go there every time we go up to Sunset Beach.
Guys, there is a new place to eat in Shallotte. It's called Betty's Uptown and is located on Main Street right in the heart of downtown Shallotte. It just opened last week. The restaurant owner, Gerald, is the same guy who runs Betty's at Holden Beach. The seafood is dead on! Try the tuna, grouper, or black sea bass Costa Rica style- heck try it all. He is getting most of his fish straight off the boats at OIB and HB. The building is really unique and has an extensive history in the shipping industry from the 1800's in Shallotte. Be sure to check it out next time your down. Definitely the best restaurant to be opened in the area since Boundary House- which is also hard to beat.
Breakfast (& lunch) w/ locals - Big Nells, OIB
Calabash style fried seafood - Capt. Nance's, Miss Ellas or Seafood Hut, Calabash
Shrimp, fish, oyster or scallop sandwiches & hotdogs deep fried in seafood grease (yummy)- Seafood Hut, Calabash
Better Calabash style fried seafood & sandwiches - Crab Catchers, Little River SC
Fine Dining $$ - Boundary House, Calabash
Better Fine Dining $$$ - The Brentwood, Parson's Table or Umberto's, Little River
Spagetti, giros, pizza - Little River House of Pizza (Hess gas stations on left going south on hwy 17)
Deli - Calabash Deli, Calabash
Chinese - New China, Food Lion plaza Hwy 17 Calabash/Carolina Shores
Jamaican - Sugar Shack, OIB (may be closed for season, but a "must do" if open)
Mexican - Las Palmeras, Food Lion plaza Sunset Beach
Japanese - Tomo, OIB
Yes, I like to eat as much as I like to fish....it's a toss-up at times.
yea gotta go to big nells. i like seafood hut in calabash too.
curious about bettys uptown in shallotte like oib said, i havent been yet but if its like the one at holden it will be good. oib is it the same style/price or more 'uptown'?
Visit the area quite often as my wife grew up there and the inlaws still reside there...Sharky's is one of my favorite places as is big nell's for breakfast.....I do like the boundry house as well...Seafood hut is an old standby and visit it pretty often as the wife's family own/run the place....enjoy your visit.....oh yea, joes' bbq isn't what is used to be in my opinion
Thanks for all the comments guys. That should give us plenty of places to eat. Breakfast and lunch with locals is usually good food. We'll probably go "uptown" at least one night.
Probably hit the basspro while I'm down there too.
The best I've ever had. I made the modifications for Chicken and Ribs and used it straight for chopped. Still experimenting with modifications. The ribs were out of this world!!
Don't go to Joe's BBQ - It's just plain terrible, bring a barf bag if you do (very greasy).
.
Tried Betty's Uptown in Shallotte this past week and it was pretty good. It should be as good as Betty's waterfront in Holden Beach which always had good seafood.
Sugar Shack is excellent - Jamaican style ribs and grilled shrimp are great. They put a huge pile of food on your plate which is not a good thing for me as I really need to cut back.
Cinelli's is also excellent
Sharky's is an excellent hangout / eat by the water type of place - food is just OK
Giggling Mackeral - food is barely OK but great beach beer drinking atmoshphere.
The Isles - used to be great but barely passable now and way way overpriced for what it is now, great view.
For Pizza - Joey's Pizza is outstanding _ Coralreefer told me about this palce and he was dead on - great Pizza.
Where is the Boundary House? Sounds like I need to try that place. And...I don't think I've ever tried Twin Lakes but have always heard it was good.
Boundary House is in Calabash behind Calahan's, the big store with all of the Knick-knacks. Owned by the same people. My wife works in the restaurant. Basically speaking, you can get everything BUT Calabash style fried seafood there. Pleasant change if you ask me--I can't stand heat lamp fried food.
I highly recommend eating there. Good prices and everything on the menu is good. My wife and I ate there several times before she started working there and I still do lunch at least once or twice a week.
