Anyone Know of a Good Yamaha Certified Mechanic in Southport, NC Area?
Time for my F115 to have a few maintenance items done (new timing belt, new thermostat, valve clearance checked). Plus, have an issue with motor sometime stalling when throttling back to idle that I need looked at. Have a good mechanic you could recommend?

You might give Blackbarry a try. They are close and seem to have good service. I had excellent service at Atlantic Marine in Wrightsville Beach when I was running a Mercury. I think they also service Yamahas. I am very happy with the service Saltwater Marine has provided for my Suzuki. I have a feeling they also service Yamahas. There are several boat places along Long Beach Road that you might want to check out to see if you like the way they look.

Thanks for the suggestions. Yeah, Blackbarry was one of my possible choices. Have bought some Yamaha parts/supplies from them before, just never had any service work done there.
And I'll shoot Butch an email.
Was mainly looking for anyone's experience, good or bad, before I pull the trigger on getting work done.

I purchased my F250 from them and have had three services performed there. Good people and the only ones I've worked with that met every deadline that they set. Might have to wait a few days for an appt.--but they're busy becasue they treat people well.
Ask for Steve-O.

Carried a 225-4 to Blackbarrys during last year's US Open.
Problem, overheating at idle (while livebaiting), very low water pressure per guage.
Diagnosed by Blackbarrys as needs water pump. Pulled pump impeller (looked brand new) and replaced in pump housing. Never used a torque wrench or anti-sieze. Ran the same. A manager said he would call Yamaha "in the morning" for advise.
Next morning I called for verdict. Manager said "Come get boat". "Do what?" said I, "Come get boat".
I came and got boat.
Over the next few weeks, with the help of SIM I might add, found problem.
One stuck T-stat.
I left out all the BS that went on to shorten this post.

I think I have a similar problem with my F25. Runs great at high and low speeds but misses some at medium. When slowing down it stalls and then picks back. Does this a couple of times till it slows down and idles properly.
Carried this new motor back twice to Blackberry and they said it ran just fine. One of the mechanics there said he had know idea what the problem was, the owner said it was a fuel problem. Not!
If you find out what the cause is on your motor please let me know. Thanks

I had an overheating problem which SIM (the Yamaha Vendor here) helped me with. Ended up being a stuck t-stat. Is there a way to run your motor off of a portable gas tank? That would clear up questions about fuel. Be sure to check with SIM and get a 10 micron Yamaha filter if you don't already have one.
A long haul, but if I had to get Yamaha work done, I would pull to Crocker's Marine (the Parker/Grady dealer) in Wilmington.
Re: Anyone Know of a Good Yamaha Certified Mechanic in Southport, NC Area?
The motor ran just fine. I had a very weak "tell-tell" stream, water presssure guage never over maybe 5#'s, and overheat alarm would go off after maybe 30 min. of idleing (live bait fishing). I could get alarm to go off by raising idle in neutral for a few seconds.
The T-stat was corroded open (I didn't always have a way to flush motor). A stuck open t-stat will not allow water pressure to build up and flow to power head (or something like that).
Re: Anyone Know of a Good Yamaha Certified Mechanic in Southport, NC Area?
Thanks FF. I have an engine that will run fine for 30-60 min in the 4000-4300 range then out of no where it will miss. After it boggs out for a second I can push the throtle open and she is fine for anouther 30 min. The motor runs flawless other than that. Took it to Jimmy's marine and they replaced fuel pump and ignition coil. They put it in the water and ran it and everything was fine. But guess they didn't run it long enough.

"willtalton"...
The most common repairs made on Yamahas seem to be filters. You should have a 10 micron Yamaha filter in the bilge of your Contender, the small water seperator filter on the front of the motor (the one with the floating ring), there is a inline filter on top of your motor (225-4). You can look at SIM's site here, it was recently discussed. Another filter that causes some problems is the VST filter. Search here and at SIM's site for info.
Good luck with repairs, be sure to post results.
Lumberton, huh ? You fish around Southport? We don't see too many Contenders (except at tourney time) !

Vapor seperator (tank ? ) filter Will, glad to see that all is relatively OK, wish I had the Yammi on the Grady, not liking the Mercury so far, but love the boat.
