Default OK, waddid I do wrong?

While on vacation this week at Outer Banks, ( just for sh**s and giggles) I took two sons-law to Oregon Inlet bridge to fish. Tide had peaked an hour before we wet a line. Nothing was biting in surf at Corolla or at piers we paid $1 to get on to on the way south: hence the stop at the western side of the bridge. I had caught a few spot there before and I thought it would be the best place overall to drop a line, without spending more money.
We each caught a few really small pompano and two pigfish.... again, nobody on either side of the bridge were doing much.
SUDDENLY, I got the strongest hit I ever had! ... so strong the 10 lb. line spun off, even with the drag almost solid tight. Before I knew it, whatever-it-was went under the bridge. I tightened the drag even more, just kinda held on, waiting for the fish to take a breather, and it never did. Within one minute, the line snapped.
Curses!

Cobia?
Isn't it kinda late in the year for them?

I'd guess a shark or a ray, maybe an old drum.

What bait were you using?

I was using my 8' TICO Medium Heavy rod with Daiwa 4000 reel and fresh shrimp+fake bloodworms on 2 smallish flounder hooks with two ounce pyramid sinker, about halfway down the inside but at the time windward side of bridge.

That bridge is a notorious hangout for drum, sharks, and stripers. It doesn't take them long to learn where to go to be safe and cut your line in the meanwhile. If you watch the boaters live baiting, when they get a bite, they back off the bridge to fight.

Big skate or drum. You had no chance with light tackle.

I don't fish there, but the description of "hit hard and line spun off", I'd vote shark.
