I'm looking more and more towards hanging up the six guns up here in the Northern Va area and finding a SC area to re-locate in for retirement. Recently got a pamphlet from a developer in Cape Fear area, and fer sure gonna check it out, but with the great resources of the Hull truth at hand sure would like to hear from some of you already established down south. Wouldn't mind waterfront property, but honestly, don't mind trailering the boat to a local ramp. Its kinda nice if you live in a neighborhood where you can park the boat along side the house and wipe it down at your leisure after a day on the water. Don't think I wanna be hanging my tucas out right on the beach or some thin strip of OBX land that is subject to hurricane's wrath, but other than that I am open to suggestions.
Wife and I are gonna do a 4 day pass down in the Wilmington area, so I want to mark up a map and check out various locations.
There are some good deals on the Island now, with many new properties available.
Its a nice place, but boat ramps are crowded and parking is impossible on big weekends.
Wilmington is a great City; check out covenents on properties inside thei City prohibiting parking boats on trailers outside houses. I think that rule is City wide.
The "Cape Fear Region" is a great place for fishing and boating.
Good luck.

i agree with the parking, but if you stick to the state park the boat ramp is one of the best in the state.

Don't miss the Hampstead area. Mainland property with waterway access. Pecan Grove has a boatramp, kayak launch,
and boat storage along with clubhouse, tennis courts and swimming pool. There are several open houses this weekend
(9/31-10/1) You'll have to check on times.
I'll write those down in my little black book, keep em coming.
Won't be making the trip this weekend, but prolly (I'm working on my southern accent) in the next month or so.
Almost forgot, next town up from Hampstead is Holly Ridge. There are several newly devoloped commuities with water access to the Intercoastal Waterway. One is
Kings Harbor, very resonable prices on a diamond in the rough.
I actually live in a neighborhood called Scotts Hill which is between Wilmington and Hampstead. We have a great local marina and some really nice folks in the area. I have a vacant lot that I have decided to sell. If you are interested in building, this might be a good fit for you. Let me know if you think you might want to take a look and we can make arrangements. Lot will be priced $10k to $15k below comps for sale. $215-ish.
speakin of holly ridge i can set you up with some guys on waterfront community. its called summerhouse. on everett bay, no access on the bay but i think there is access on kings creek. not far from wilmington or jacksonville and especially close to some good fishin.
Check out the Little River SC area. It is a nice little town. The inlet is great to go out of and the ICW is not too developed (yet). Plus, if you want to be full time N. Myrtle offers has some good amentities for year round living.
Franco, what development was the info you have on? Definately might want to look at Sneeds Ferry. Good prices for a nice waterview home, and several nice ramps in the area. Nice close inlet with easy access to the ocean. Quick access to the river, and plenty of marsh land. A good number of people from Northern VA are retiring in this area.
I don't want to sound like a sales person, but I have a lot in Carolina Beach that I was going to build on this winter and unfortunately I am being relocated to the Triangle of NC (Raleigh/Durham). I just purchased the lot in the Spring. It is already cleared and graded. Even has some landcaping in place. Ready for a house. We have a set of plans that have already been approved. (I would have to locate them).
The lot is located at Harbour Pointe Yacht Club. This is a great community with boating being the focus. It has views of the ICWW and Snows Cut. You can build up to 50' high there, which means you could probably have views of the ocean. There are no building timeframes, restrictive covenents, or HOA dues because the lot was sold after the completion of the neighborhood. This is a big deal because HOA dues are approx. $350/month w/o a boat slip. You are not required to purchase or lease a slip from the yacht club. One of the public boat ramps is approx. 100 yards from the lot. In other words, you don't have to worry about parking there because you could put your boat in and take trailer across street to your house. The boats slips at the marina are about 150 yards from the lot. There is a pool and a clubhouse that is waterfront if you purchase or lease from the marina. All in all this is a great lot in an unbelievable location. I would LOVE to keep it...but I also own a house on Topsail. One of them has to go before moving. I am not trying to make money off it. I am willing to sell it for what I have in it.
Please go to Google earth and type in "309 Spencer Farlow Drive, Carolina Beach, NC" for an overhead view of the lot. Google earth is not exact but it will get you to within 50 - 70 yards of the lot.
In addtion, I have a couple of pics of the clubhouse, marina, pool, etc. that I could email you.
Boating we have done has been driven by the family and their interests. When boys were younger, tubing and fishing on the Potomac was about all, as they got older they acquired GF's we moved to Sunning and quiet coves. Still take boat to Ocean for summer vacations, and fish in the bay side of Ocean City. And I did manage one trip to the wonderful Chesapeke bay. Our boat is not that big, see http://sempreveloce.tripod.com/
We have been looking at a 27' Crownline CCR but that's more of a boat payment, and I'm not sure its gonna happen. So its basically a daily outing maybe stopping for diner, or lunch, coves and picnic type outings with the occasional fishing expedition. I would do more fishing if I had more time and knew more about the types of rigs needed, and prefer saltwater fishing to fresh. Round these parts mostly its Catfish, spot or pearch, with only the real hard core Bass fishermand able to bring in anything edible.
South Carolina is the goal for me, only because they seem to be courting retirees and they seem to have common sense gun laws. But research has been slow going. I seem to recall Sneed's Landing being close to the Marine Corp base and not a bad area. I really need to get the wife to take a trip to the area for a summer vacation and then do some driving around.
I imagine the info you got was a new development called Summerhouse. They have been doing a lot of marketing up in your neck of the woods. Lots of empty land, nothing even started yet, it is in the middle of nowhere really. If you are looking at SC look at Murrells Inlet, SC there you have both the river on one side, and on the other the inlet and ocean. They are not connected at this location. Lots of retirees. If you want something a little different, look down towards Georgetown. There you have the big expanse of the river leading to the ocean. Something you might want to look at, is there is a new development going on in Murrells Inlet, Condos with a clubhouse and Marina, and the info I have is that if you have a slip at the marina, you have a slip at everyone of the other developments along the coast (about every 90 miles) great for cruising up and down the coast....
