We think the walk-around hull style is the best boat for families who enjoy fishing and cruising. The Scout 242 Abaco is one of the most graceful blends of both. We found four gunwale rod holders and dedicated rod storage with two racks under the hard top and four more in the cuddy. Optional rocket launchers on the hardtop are a must.
Over on the starboard gunwale is a livewell with freshwater sink and cutting board. Below it is an awesome tackle locker with slide-in Plano tackle boxes and drawers. A second livewell is under the starboard jump seat. A portside gunwale fish locker holds the fish on ice, and it balances the load when baitwells are active.
Most impressive is the integrated aft lounge that stretches from gunwale to gunwale. The seat removes and stows away, while the seat back remains to form a padded coaming and wave gate to lean against while slugging it out with fish. Jump-seat cushions stow away from fishing action, when hooks and fish waste are flying.
Belowdecks we found a convertible V-berth large enough to sleep two adults with all cushions in place. A pump-out head is concealed beneath an upholstered starboard bench, and a portside lounge offers needed seating.
The Abaco comes with a gorgeous pastel-green gelcoat that tastefully accents its graceful lines. The entire cockpit, gunwales and foredeck are finished in a good-looking diamond nonskid finish, so footing is secure even when wet. Passage from cockpit to bow is ample given the boats size. Construction is intended to last a lifetime, thanks to all-composite stringers, transom and core. Our high-speed offshore runs in three- to four-foot seas proved the build was solid. The 242 Abaco tracked confidently in high-speed turns and docked like a seasoned horse heading to the stables.
Final Take: Strong for anglers, comfortable for cruisers
We Also Liked
1. Water-resistant Yamaha LCD gauges at the helm.
2. Livewells and portside cooler are lighted to ease bait selection and end-of-day washdown.
3. Steps to gunwales are molded into coamings for easy deck access without using cockpit space.
4. Pop-up cleats all around are heavy-duty stainless steel.
5. Battery shut-off means one switch isolates the battery to assure full charge on next trip.
I forgot this Scout 242 Abaco comes with 4 Jack stands purchased new this year. Boat was just covered for the winter and requires NO ELBOW GREASE. Lets make a deal
Do you know what pitch the prop is when you recorded the numbers above? The reason I ask is because we troll at a speed of 2.5-3.0mph and at 650 RPM's doing 3.6mph, is a little quick with not much room to cut the rpm's down.
If it's the stock prop, I can go one pitch lower to loose some speed.
Priced out a 2006 today roughly $71,000 for the same thing you got.
the above specs I believe are from scouts website. Thinking about your comments I sometimes troll 700rpm for a speed of 2-2.5 knots. so the slow troll is no problem. I do not know the pitch I will get out there and take a look for you. The boat trolls great. Good luck to you. If you decide to save $20k or so give me a call.
Just looked at a 21 Sportfish recently, nice boat. I am looking for a boat I can trailer to and from Florida.I also live on long Island.Call me @ (631)645-1101 or write @ jackmartino@aol.com.
