Located in Babylon, this boat has been my dream boat for serious sport/commercial fishing and commercial crabbing for the past 15 years. Launched in 1991 but don't let the age fool you. This is a rock solid boat for inshore and offshore fishing as well as lobstering. Built by the original BHM (Blue Hill Marine) boat builders before Duffy and the ABC bought them out and screwed them up by cheaping out on materials. These boats were originally designed and built to be heavy and solid. She loves carrying weight and earns her keep. The only limit: how much can you catch? Fifty yellowfin tuna, iced to perfection.....no problem.
Although the boat is rigged for blue crabbing and lobstering (I never pulled a single lobster pot with her so no scratches on hull), all the commercial equipment is easily removed and we do so on a regular basis. Beneath the table and along side gunwale are thirteen rod holders for tuna fishing. The starboard cabin side is hinged to open in and exposes the the stainless/bronze lobster hauler which we use for deep water anchoring while tuna fishing in the canyons or offshore wreck fishing. The CAT 3208 T/A 375 HP and Twin Disc 2.5:1 have 800 hours since new replacement. These are not rebuilt and they work flawlessly. The BHM 36 is a solid commercial work boat which can fish when the sporty boats are going home. Although not a speed demon, she will cruise loaded at a true 17 knots @ 2500 RPM and top out at 22 knots @ WOT. Canyon trips, completely loaded and carrying 2000 pounds of ice, I usually burn 180 gallons of # 2 heating oil. Cats love it.
Reason for selling: Been there, done that and had a blast. I've had Bertrams to Makos, Longliners to Clammers and just about everything in between. Hands down, this boat has been my all time favorite and parting with it will be a sad day for me but a joy for someone else who is really into fishing. My wife and I have decide to move on to something else and are looking to buy a long range cruiser/liveaboard. This boat is in the water and used on a regular basis year round. Trials can easily be arranged.
Priced to sell @ $90,000.
P.S.: For those of you who may have kept old issues of the "National Fisherman" circa 1992-1994, the photo used for the half page ad placed by BHM during those years was this boat.
Once the weather clears up, I will have an opportunity to take and post more photos. I wasn't really ready to put this boat up for sale and just did it on a whim. It will be sold, I just was not ready for all the necessary advertising.
This boat has three very comfortable, cushioned, full size V-berths up front with storage beneath the bunks. The engine is spotless. This spring I will be stripping her down to her tuna fishing set-up. What's nice about the BHM over most other downeasters is her ability to carry weight. For anyone who has a NY/NJ Commercial Crab permit, there isn't a crab dredge boat that can compete with this rig. For the ambitious, this boat opens a lot more opportunities to make a lot of extra cash rather than the typical plain Jane's out there. Downeasters were made to work and earn their keep. The BHM 36' can out carry any model of the same size.
Some Features:
Factory new (not a rebuild) 3208 TA 375 HP
Factory new (not a rebuild) Twin Disc 2.5:1 Transmission
(Beware of rebuilt 3208's and who rebuilds them. These engines do not have replaceable sleeves. The engine life is severely limited on a rebuild and why they only offer a one year warranty. A new engine will get you an easy 10,000 hours, not a rebuild.)
Cabin Bus Heater for the coldest of weather.
V-berth Catalytic Heater.
Wash Decks
Raised Cabin Sole
Hinged Starboard Side
Aft Station Engine Controls. (Aft stations do have a purpose on this type of boat)
Dual Sliding Cabin Doors which open to center.
28" x 28" prop
Full Keel and shoe for prop protection and seakeeping ability
2 - 150 gallon fuel tanks for a total of 300 gallons
Engine and Transmission Quick Change Oil System (Oil can be changed in less than five minutes)
Thirty GPM Hydraulic Pump with Electric Clutch and Pitts Driveshaft.
Kobelt Engine Controls.
Garmin 3210 GPS
Northstar GPS
Raytheon 8" Video Fishfinder
VMS Vessel Monitoring System
406 Epirb
Solas A raft. (Reguired for an offshore General Tuna Permit which this boat currently holds.)
Three like new Survival Suits
Two 8-D Batteries
One 26 Group Electronic Battery with Battery Combiner.
1 1/4" Washdown Pump with emergency bilge pumpout capability.
New 2009 Stainless Steering Quadrant with replaceable Bronze bushings
New 2009 Hydraulic Steering Ram with new hydraulic hoses and fittings
Stainless/Bronze lobster hauler. Only used on this boat for anchoring.
For those interested in crab/scallop gear: All aluminum rigging built by Errol Roberts in Machias Maine. Absolutely the finest aluminum fabricator. Stainless support cables. Hydraulic winch capable of 600' 1/2" cable. 8' Crab Dredge and 8' Scallop Dredge available.
1800' of 1/2" Anchor Rode and Deepset Danforth for Canyon Anchoring.
4' Bonar Fish Box (perfect for icing tuna)
I will also consider trades for late model 23' - 26' Regulators or Contenders with trailer. Not interested in any other trades, don't even ask.
For those who are interested in opening a new horizon to your fishing, this is the boat. When the weekend comes and the weather is crap, you can still fish. If you are lucky enough to get on them, you can legally bring as many as you can catch home. After dumping my Bertram, I paid this boat off in two years of fun sport/commercial fishing part time. Also, the tax advantages are of owning a commercial boat is well worth looking into. I fish for free and the government paid for 1/3 of my boat.
No sorry Kep, I'm going to keep her for another season, at least. This an awesome boat and after some incredible tuna trips this year, I decided, I like tuna fishing on a downeast style boat over a center console. I'm not knocking the center console, I have one, and for those that like to zoom out and back they're great with the right conditions but for me, 50 to 100 mile runs are way more comfortable and a lot more fun on this.
Since putting this ad up, I've upgraded the electronics and added a new SOLAS A life raft. New electronics include: a Garmin GMR 24HD along with a Garmin 5212. The Northstar is a backup. For fish finding, I installed a Furuno 585 and Airmar B260 transducer. And, to make the trip a little easier at the helm, I added a Simrad AP28 autopilot. Still on the upgrade list is a LeBroc Tradewinds high back helm seat and a possible tuna door along with some cosmetic fiberglass work. As of this post, a new cabin top handrail/rocket launcher is being built to hold a sixteen rods. This will be a real nice addition to keep the three bunks clear for sleeping and give us a lot more flexibility to target other fish without having to give up cabin or bunk space for rod storage.
Ultimately, I will be selling it. Offers will be considered at anytime and you will see it here on THT throughout 2011 catching tuna. My wife and I want to get another live aboard in order to get back into long range cruising. That will probably be in the spring of 2012.
You mentioned commercial boat in your ad. Are you selling the boat and its commercial permits (corporate) as well. Would like to discuss.
Joe Massapequa
What type of commercial permits are you looking for? I have NYS commercial permits but unfortunately you cannot transfer NYS permits unless it's to your blood relative like your son. As for NMFS, I have a general tuna license but anyone can get one of these if you have the proper equipment aboard your vessel. My scallop license is available but it's a five bushel license.
i am looking for a corporate ground fish or fin fish license (NYS) As far as i know that would include scup, seabass, blues, monk, cod, and oh yea blackfish among other species. I guess what i really want is the blackfish. My buddy has fluke and blackfish. I am not sure if they are on the same ticket. His is individual, cant be sold.. I also know a fellow swelling a federal finfish ( CORPORATE), all species mentioned except blackfish, too bad. I am not sure if they are on the same ticket. His is individual, cant be sold..
Thanks for responding. Nice boat. I am shopping for a DE , not as big though. It is tough to find one that meets all your needs esp. in the 28 to 32 foot class. I want the creature comforts that many dont offer. I want 18 knot minimum another feature that is hard to come by. I'll keep looking.
Would like to check out your rig when you decide to sell.
Im local, sailing out of w.islip, just a few canals to the east of you.
Currently running 28 Albemarle single diesel. See you out there.
For sale or not, I would love to see more pics. Awesome boat.
Thanks Crazy. Yeah, it's always been a pretty awesome boat to me also. I don't have many pictures of the actual boat. We mainly have photos of fishing and crabbing whereby you just see happy faces. For the most part, it's stripped down like a working downeast boat should be. Everything mechanical is perfect and the engine can be eaten off of. Since getting out of crabbing full time, I've been redoing the boat cosmetically. For instance, the grab rails are original and made of teak. I don't like teak, especially old teak. I designed new grab rails to incorporate rod holders for rod storage as I mentioned above in an earlier post. I will be making them out of 6061 schedule 40 aluminum pipe. I considered anodized but decided against the fancy finish, I don't find it necessary. The boat is already setup for an easy green stick install and has all the necessary hydraulics to handle any size reel. I'm still kicking it back and forth as to whether I want one. The install is usually the hard part. For this boat, it's a piece of cake and only requires a 4" x 36" piece of aluminum pipe which bolts to the main mast. As for the "A" frame rigging, it all comes off with the removal of 6 bolts. The mast would stay for lots of reasons and uses.
Here's an interesting picture of my actual boat. It was a half page ad in the National Fisherman magazine for BHM in the old days before ABC bought out Flye Point. Those were the days when they didn't scrimp on construction. My boat is rock solid.
M.E.. I'm a few canals west of the BV Pool. Stop by anytime. We will be fishing all winter. My fingers are crossed for a good cod season. Either way, we catch hermit crabs with the crab dredge and plan to fish tog on a regular basis. Nice thing about a solid glass BHM, four inches of ice is no problem to go through.

Joe, getting a NYS food fish license which allows the holder more access to blackfish is a tough proposition. It can be had but there are a lot of hoops you must jump through and each year the hoops get smaller. Getting a NYS fluke license is virtually impossible.
As for a downeast that may suit your needs, perhaps a 30' Sisu might be to your liking. In my old days, I fished extensively on one both inshore and offshore in some really crappy conditions and was amazed at how they perform. They won't have the 18 knot minimum you're looking for but life is a compromise. I've been trying to convince a neighbor to sell his and buy my boat but he just won't let go.
When you convince your neighbor to take yours maybe i will take his. I got a feelin its going to take a while to find whaT i WANT AT THE RIGHT PRICE..
I am hoping to stumble across a commercial boat with all the licenses and buy the biz. I can dream. I fish weekdays, semi-retired, if you need crew for bottom fishing..
Reminds me of "the good old days" when I fished on a (35')? JC in the early 80's. Very similar style, the JC wasn't set up for the trawl. Same engine and she rode out a storm really nice.
You've got a great boat there, it will make someone a lifetime of memories.
