I saw that in Marlin magazine. The kid was 17 had to be air lifted to get his face sewn up.That scar is going to be a conversation peice to say the least.Looked like skip was throwing down hard on that fish
That was at the Tropic Star Lodge in Panama. They do run the boats aggressive there, but that was an incident that no professional crew could have avoided. When a hot black decides to change direction like that there's really nothing you can do. Playing with fish like that is dangerous, and they were lucky that no one was killed.
All the marlin I have caught, although none that large, were kept on one of the rear corners until we had a good chance at wiring the fish and bringing it along side the boat. backing down on a fish that is 10 feet from the stern is what caused this incident.
Shat happens, it was an accident, but to say there is nothing an experienced crew could have done is wrong. IMO.
once they were where they were, all the captain could have done was try to get the boat out of the way. When I was there I thought my captain was top notch (Dago Berto). I am sure it was just like the 200 or whatever other marlin the captain and crew has caught, till this one did something a little differant. The fish made it's move and the captain had one sec. to make his and he didn't. I don't think this makes what happened his fault, but I think POSSIBLY it could have been avoided but I wasn't there. It is amazing how fast those fish move. Just my 02.
The kid wasn't speared, he got hit in the head pretty good though. I think he broke his jaw. They had him on Fox News, it was a crazy story..he was also very very lucky that he didn't get speared.

All the Marlin you have caught, probably dont even come close to what the average captian there does in a year. If you have never had to back down on a big marlin then you haven caught a big marlin. Further more backing down on the fish to get a quick release is much better for fish surviaval and in a place like Tropic Star it allows you to get fishing again. This was a rare occurance but it does happen. I once had a blue marlin almost jump in the boat and on another occasion I had one jump near the boat and almost hit my brother in the chest. Big game fishing is dangerous, plain and simple. Luckily in this case no one was killed.
