Knew you were working down there. Good to hear from you.
The wife and I made our first trip into the New Orleans area last Saturday, 10-29. We stayed on I-10-610 thru New Orleans and exited on I-510, Paris Hwy. Our intention was to go to Bait Inc at Bayou Beinvenue. I had seen some pictures of the casino truck stop, it didn't look too damaged. So our hope was that the owners were cleaning up the bait shop and attempting to reopen. Having tried to get in touch with the owners a few times and failing, we took it on faith that they'd be there. Well the pictures fail to show the whole story, mud everywhere, walls blown out, sunken barges in the canal, large boat stuck into the side of the bait shop- 20' above water level. Shrimp boats everywhere, on the side the road, in the ditches, in the parking lot, sunk in the canal. A huge pile of mud where it looks like some one was starting to try to clean the parking lot. But I am afraid it will be some time before any one opens the place up for business. Still no electricity in the area, the cell phone tower in the parking lot was back up, but it was still being run on generator power.
Passing through New Orleans on the interstate I got the impression that everything was the same color. Dust-mud covered cars, dead grass, dead trees, water marks on homes, broken bricks, very few people. It was as if New Orleans was one of those ghost towns you see on the oldtime western movies.
After leaving Bait Inc. Donna and I went down hwy 90 towards Chef Pass. The devastation outside the levee system just past Bayou Savauge is incredible. Not one building, not one house, not one structure of any kind undamaged. At Venetian Isles it was more of the same. Fort Macomb Marina torn apart, sunken boats. Jr.'s where I used the landing, the building was entirely and completely gone, not even debri. The homes in Venetian Isles, water damage, broken roofs, flooded cars, down trees, autos in the canals. Even the new homes that were suposed to be built to the new codes were flooded and torn up. The hwy 90 bridge over Chef Pass was still out so we turned around and went home.
On the way home we thanked our lucky stars.
If our plans hold up we are going to be making a fishing trip down to Breton Sound Marina Tuesday. They are open and actually asking people to head on down. I will try to remember to bring my camera.

Geez the devastation is awful. Any idea what the markings sprayed on the homes signify? Of course it shows that they were searched but any more? Its going to take a long time to get back to late as it was down there and forever to forget.
Maybe some one who is more up on it will chime in . But the marks signify the house/structure was searched and what if anything was found. Left hand side is agency that done the search, top I think is when and if the house was entered, right hand and bottom is souls found living and dead, not sure which is which. One photo shows where a SPCA group searched the home and found a dead dog.
Did you guys ever think we'd see such things in the good ole US of A?

Alot of destruction all over. I have some pictures and will post them soon, as well. I just found out today, from guy down ther street that was here durring and right after the storm, that some guys had a truck backed up to my boat in the driveway and were looking it over. He was on his roof fixing it and he yelled over to them. He said they looked startled. He said he called to them again but they didnt respond. He fired some shots at the ground and they left quickly. Pretty scary that I might have come home to have a stolen boat. My dealer had several new and private boats stolen, but all of them were recovered. The new ones were in Baton Rouge.

the X in the box means heavy roof damage the F-O means (floor open) when you see FL 1 FL 2 thats what floor level is open meaning theres a hole in the floor, we use those symbols in the fire service for identifiying whats inside abandoned houses

Those vehicle stacked like cord wood and end-to-end were placed at key intersections to stop looters from entering St. Bernard Parish. Still had looting even with these precautions, just not as massive. Did notice a bunch of boats lying around with the engines missing.

i am posting this from the corner of st claude ave and caffin ave, in the lower 9th, from a laptop. some kind of way i'm getting a wireless connection, probably from one of the military dishes. anyway the info on the house markings is correct, it notes the agency that did the house search and what they found, dead or alive. the yellow and black house with FD on it is fats domino's house...he got rescued from his rooftop from the flood. the vehicles stacked up are at the border of st bernard parish on north claiborne ave...they were stacked there to block access to st bernard as noted above.
everything is covered with gray dried mud...that green house pictured is not on a dead end, it's sitting in the middle of the street, washed off its slab
just about every part of town looks like that, except the houses are nicer in other areas
29 i went thru st bernard the other day to the murphy oil refinery to pick up some trucks...you should see that mess. tim's marine is pretty trashed, they lost all their boats and just about everything else is covered in mud and crude oil from the spill.
the good news for me anyway is that i have my first day off in 5 weeks tomorrow, and me and the 4-eyed gadwall are going to fourchon to kill some fish!
Well Chris I have been down there as well. What a mess!
Supposed to fly over my business partners camp at "Point La Hatch" and the Venice area either Wednesday or Thursday. I am sure I will see some sites on that flight!
Was in Pass Christian again this weekend. One of these trips I will HAVE to take some pictures. Each time I go I say this. But as usual the camera seems to be left behind each time.
We went over to where my business partners parents house USED to be this weekend while in Pass CHristian. Man that was depressing. Nothing left to the homes along the street he lived on but pileings where the houses used to be. Building material, clothing and anything else that you normally see in a home scattered all over the place. Surprisingly his pier/dock survived with little dameage.
From his fathers place you can see where the Bay St Louis brige used to be. Very few spans still in tackt. The drawbrige section can't be seen either. It will be a L O N G time before that one is useable again.
I saw several nice (Well used to be nice) Whalers, Mako's and several other FINE rigs trashed in/around trees as well as other places. We found his fathers boats though. One about 1/4 mile away, upside down and trashed of course.....
Like I said, each time I go over there I come back depressed. But on the same token, I come back appriciateing how fortuneate we are compared to the folks who lived there....

I have been on the Northshore with Seatow since the storm. I also have plenty pictures that I need to post up. It is amazing how some places made it and others are just gone. Boats piled up everywhere and sunken everywhere.
