Got some photos of an old B-25 that crashed in Lake Murray many years ago. They were raising it tonight, so we decided to go see her come up. They used an island on the lake for bombing practice during training. Story with this one was that during a run, the crew wanted to check out some girls on one of the beaches, well, you know the rest of the story. I've seen it happen on the blvd in Myrtle Beach many times, but never a plane. All crew members survived and at least one is still with us today.
It was somewhere about 2 miles from the dam, but they hauled it up under the barge and towed it to the dam to raise it and put it on a cradle. If you want, it'll be on the cradle for 3 or 4 days (they say) before it's taken to a museum in Alabama for restoration. Right now it's at the landing at the dam. If you're in the area and haven't seen it already, it's really cool to see.
I went by there this morning and took some more pics. I'll get them posted at lunch.
• The airplane will be taken apart over the next three or four days at the landing on the north side of the dam. The public is invited to watch from behind barriers.
• Once the airplane is disassembled, it will be shipped to the Museum of Southern Flight in Birmingham, Ala. After its restoration, it will be the centerpiece of a new wing at the museum.
• The B-25C bomber crash-landed in the lake during a training mission on April 4, 1943. The crew escaped safely, and the plane sank to a depth of 150 feet.
• It was rediscovered by a group of aviation buffs 15 years ago, and since then, plans for its retrieval have gone forward. Organizers of the effort say it is one of the oldest B-25 bombers left.
I got the oportunity to fly on the B24 named Diamond Lil that is toured by the Commemorative Air Force along with my grandfather and a few of his WWII buddies. They made a stop at the Donaldson Cntr. in greenville and had several other planes with them including a B29 named FIFI. Definitely an experience that I will never forget. I am sort of a history buff, and really love WWII history and getting to talk about the various events with my grandfather, and have gotten to go to a couple of his navy reunions. On memorial day weekend in 2002 we were also able to go out of savanah on the Liberty Ship John W. Brown.
Shoot, a little rewiring and a buff job with some Bar Keepers add a couple of Verado's and you got something........ cool old plane, if it could only talk it would say "what the heck took you guys so long???"

I don't know if they do or not. A couple of years ago they had the Tuskegee Airmen reunion/anniversary there, but I haven't heard of anything there lately. There was a crash there during the airshow a year or two ago and the pilot died. That may have put a damper on the shows for a couple of years.
For those that might be interested, if you're every going to visit Long Island, NY, then check out the American Airpower Museum for some very interesting WWII planes. You can check it out online here:
Here is my link for some of the 1600 pictures I took over the 12 day operation!
Here you'll see the best interior shots as well... I had access to the inside.
The Lake Greenwood Bomber ("Skunkie") (crashed 6-6-44) was the one buzzing girls when it crashed.
You may see it at Owens Field... or at this web site...
In fact, it was way out of it's flight plan. They flew there just to show off to one of the crews girl, who, with her friends, were sunbathing on THAT lake. NOT this one.
The Lake Murray B25C (41-12634) developed port engine problems and ditched (after a heated discussion between crew members).
I have all seven of the 20+ page incident reports on all seven Air Corps Crashes within Lake Murray if anyone wants to see them.
