The whole world knew that Hurricane Katrina was going to fill New Orleans up. Go to www.nola.com and read the 5 or 6 page report on what a Cat 4 or 5 Hurricane was predicted to do the city. It happened exactly as predicted. The levees were made to beat a Cat 3 Storm, nothing more. The head of the Army Corps of Engineers said it plainly on TV the other day. When the levees were designed, they were only designed for Cat 3 Hurricanes. That would protect the city from 99.5% of the storms. At the time, that was a sufficient level of protection. This storm was supposed to do what it did.
Next thing, New Orleans has to be rebuilt. The country can't survive without the Port of New Orleans. It is the fifth largest port in the world. The most significant thing about New Orleans is that it is at the end of a river that drains 2/3 of the US. Most of the grain from the MidWest that is loadedonto ships and sent overseas is tranferred to ships at the Port of New Orleans. It is brought down river by barge. There is no more economical way to move bulk cargo. There is no way for us to get that cargo to other ports. We don't have the infrastructure as a country to move that much cargo by land. There is a reason New Orleans has always been here and there is a reason it will return. It's all about economics. And right now the US is in jam that will us all problems in the near term and long term.

Love the pic though.

I can only imagine the torment and trauma going on down there, and my support and prayers are with everyone who lost or suffered........but that picture made me laugh out loud. And I'm a Republican.

I know...that's why!!

I feel bad for the people, but the govt is the cause of all of the problems, not the solution. I guarantee you that if the feds didn't kick in a dime that the oil and grain companies would have the port back in action twice as fast for one tenth of the money. The people who lived there could have come back and defended what was theirs if they wanted to. Eventually (within a year) the people that decided that they where going to stay would plan for the next storm and defend accordingly. Throwing money at failing airlines, farmers, beaches, and even cities just perpetuates the waste. If it's stupid to be there, that's not against the law. But evidently it is the federal governments job to spend my money to keep the stupidity going. It wasn't that long ago when if you got wiped out, you got wiped out. Personal responsibility forced people to be wise.

$300 billion - let me tell you, I was there a month before the storm, and that town needed a good soaking, not me. The smell was one I won't forget. Next year I bet it will smell the same.

Imus put that pic up this morning on TV and thought it was real and insensitive of Bush. The NBC reporter he was interviewing said "uh, I think that is doctored."

Hey, im not sure if anyone else has noticed this but....one of the Levees that failed- i belive they call it the "17th Street Levee?" is undergoing a major "patching" if you will, sand, stone, and every other type of fill material is being trucked in. I've always been into earth moving equipment since i was young so when the news paper came out after Katrina I took special notice to the John Deere 450H dozer that was in charge of patching this Levee that flooded a whole entire city. My initial thought was "wow..they only have one dozer not much bigger than a lawn tractor in charge of filling the 17th Street Levee which is a big part of the reason why the city is flooded." I was alittle surprised at this because I thought they'd make an effort to bring some BIG equipment in..since the repair of thios levee is so important.

Anyway..two days ago I took another look at the paper and another shot was taken of the Levee...well the Army Corps of Engineers still had the same small 125hp dozer on the job and NOTHING else. This may all sound stupid to some of you but coming from the mind of a 16 yr old...I'm trying to say maybe somebody doesn't want that Levee patched so quickly..

and yes the picture made me laugh...I hope that striper was released after the photo was taken?
Wow that picture is getting some mileage...

And for us dirt merchants..

At one of the other levees we saw a Cat or JD Excavator on the news ? JD has more than one 450 model. I have a 450 tractor, they make a 450 excavator too don't they, and a 450 dozer, a 450 loader ??

It has always amazed me to watch a good operator....for me nothing better than being on site and having a minute or two and stop and gaze. They do a much better job than my bucking and wobbling way of getting it done, but I can get it done, eventually.

I heard on NPR they've been playing the tides at the breaks; closing the door at high tide and reopening at low to allow water to escape.

Anyone know what kind of elevation differential they have at low tide versus the flood level ?

The whole situation is saddening...

Yes it's a photoshop job, but only because that isn't where they actually caught that fish!!! It was a little farther down the street!

Thanks for posting the photo. I showed it to a friend of mine at work and he almost fell out of his chair laughing.

I actually kind of like Old Man Bush. I think his son W is an absolute moron, though.

Ahhh for the good old days, when falling on ones sword actually involved, well, a sword.

Taking blame without accountability is kind of lame. It's something an imature brat would try to pull when caught doing something wrong "sorry, that was wrong of me, I'm getting some more dessert now".
