All right, SteveOh, don't post these pictures without commentary - what's up with "stick steering"? How does it function? What are the supposed advantages?

You have a stick between your legs attached to some sort of hinging mechanism. You attach two cables to the stick, one on port and one on starboard. Run the cables through some pulleys and to the stern and attach to your outboard. You steer with the stick, much like you would on many small airplanes.

It's cheap and bullet proof.

But me? I went with standard NFB steering box and cable from teleflex.

It may be, but it sure take's up a bunch of room and cause's a trip hazard.
I too would have went with the standard NFB steering box.

A regular steering system from teleflex is dirt cheap in the grand scheme of things. I can't see why you would spend good money on a Honda outboard and steer with a peice of lumber. All that cable and the stick itself just add way too much clutter. Just my opinion... for what thats worth.

C'mon guys, they have a custom made wooden slat chair! This was obviously built as more of a replica and remembrance of an era gone by than a modern machine with modern creature comforts. I see TWO gauges and a sticker, no depth or GPS or anything like that..

*While I wouldn't want that steering system on my boat for the reasons mentioned above, it definitely harks of a time gone by and to me, adds a unique element to the classic lines of that skiff..

*I really like it! It's like looking into the past of some old autombile..

Now that I give it a second look, it makes me think of guys "down island" zipping around in inflatables while standing - extra long tiller in one hand and a line from the bow in the other hand to hold onto. I guess if you're used to "piloting" a rubber duck with an extra long tiller, the stick steering might feel more natural than a wheel.
