Default House Paint or Bottom Paint?

My boat has been in the water for 3 months now. Brand new and painted by the dealer. I just pulled her out because I felt she was a little slow and might have some bottom growth.
Check this out!!!
I think my dealer must've used Benjamin Moore on my bottom. Now it's gonna cost me for a haul out, cleaning and repainting. I'm gonna see if he can re imburse some of the cost.

Ouch! What kind of paint was allegedly applied?

Something doesn't look right here...

#1 - that boat was not painted correctly. By that I mean that the antifoul height and 'straightness 'does not look correct. There is no way you should have that amount of slime on the port side above the antifoul.

Put that boat back in the water and look at it from a distance. Is there the same antifould height out of the water the whole way around the boat?

The proper way to strike a new boat line is to load it to the max (fuel, water, basic always on board stuff), drop the boat over in still - flat clam water for 4-5 days, haul out and mark the 'water stain' with a pencil. Make another mark 1 inch above that every foot the entire length of the hull.. Use that new mark as the height of the aintifoul. If using a batton to 'connect the marks, DO NOT hold the batton flat against the hull, hold it perpendicular to the ground and connect the marks. The longer the batten, the better.

My boat is in tropical salt water 24 x 7 x 365. I don't get that barnacle growth in a year!

I agree with Best mate - the antifoul line looks way to low, and this could be an illusion from the photos, but the line does not look even on port and starboard when it comes around the bow.

I will also go out on a limb and guess that you dealer thinned the paint on you.

What was allegedly applied to the bottom?

Dealer said he used Petit Unepoxy. I'm in the process of e-mailing him right now.

Either the paint was thinned or never shaken. All the copper was still in the bottom of the can.

If you live where the water is really salty this can happen in a short time. I used to live on the water in Miami 1/4 mile in off the inlet and my boat would get like that in a matter of a few months no matter what paint I used. My neighbors had the same problem. I would just have to get in the water and scrape it. Now I live a few miles in land where the water is not as salty and I get almost no growth.

Boaters around here are finding out that black bottom paint for some reason attracts barnicles! Now I believe them!

i'm the only one in my marina with this problem. Others are being hauled out for growth on the outdrives, but even the foreman in the boatyard said he's never seen it like this. As far as the water being too salty, no way. I'm well inside NY harbor close to the Hudson River.

My guess is that the paint sat for a long time and was not mixed before being applied. Dealer should cover all costs in my oponion.

I agree....paint was probably "thinned" too much reducing it's anti-foul properties.

Would you trust the same dealer to repaint it??

Dealer isn't repainting it. My Marina is. It's funny, when I e-mail the dealer with a question, I get a prompt reply. I sent him these pics and I haven't heard from him yet. I might have to take a little ride for a face to face. I don't think I'm going to get the total reapir cost from him, but I would at least like them to refund the $375 it cost me for the original paint job.

375 is pretty cheap - what ever it takes, get it right - that's too beautiful a boat and you put in too much hard work getting it right to mess around witha few hundred dollars....

A pain it wasn't done righht the first time but not worth burning and bridges. Never know when you may need the dealer to step up on a bigger warranty issue. May think about moving water line up a little. Lots of boats here on the Chesapeake have heavy staining and growth because they follow the factory lines when painting which changes quickly when loaded.

Best of luck,

Will probably move the water line up next spring. The staining is only on the port side because that's the side my motors lean to when they're up, so the boat has a slight list to port when at the dock. I usually clean it with the boat brush.

Well after 2 days of fishing time lost, the boat is repainted and ready to go back in. Of course I still haven't heard from my dealer. It's funny how eager they are to help you when it's just a question, but when it involves a mistake they made and a cash layout, they CLAM-UP.

$375 was too cheap for a first time bottom job. Probably should have been twice that. Luckily it looks like it was prepped right (no peeling paint). How did you know there was a problem ?

Boat felt kinda sluggish. Went to clean the tabs and felt barnacles on the hull. Ran my hand along the chines and felt more. Everywhere I put my hand I was feeling them. Really pissed me off.

You're right Glen. Boats going back in today. By tomorrow I'll forget about it, until I get the bill.
Amazing, I still haven't heard a peep from the dealer. Well so much for standing behind your work.
