Default Georgia Sheephead Fishing

Decided to skip work friday and head offshore to do a little sheephead fishing.

My brother with a nice one

I finally got one worth a picture.

Brother got a few more worthy of a pic.

And then my brother got this guy. Black Drum. We didnt get any measurements because we had not to measure with. It took him 30 minutes to get him in the boat with 14lb tackle and then released to fight another day.

Grand total of keepers 45 sheephead, 3 Black drum, 2 Black Sea Bass. Great day on the water

I'd have to agreeBut damn them jokers are a pain in the arse to clean. It takes about as much time to clean'em as it does to catch'em. Well not really but with only 1 Filet knife it took 2 hours of cleaning. But hey, I'd rather clean fish than the house any day

Redneck marking buoy. It consits of a 2" ball off of a truck, 60' of 1/4" rope and a buoy off the dock. We did how ever get to see two whales doing some National Geographic stuff but the camera wouldnt get any good pics from the distance they were.

Man I have GOTS to get on some sheepshead. That's a sweet haul!

What's your port? Savannah? I heard about a couple real sheepshead producers nearshore there.

We usually put in at Kilkenny in Richmond Hill which is 30 to 40 miles south of Savannah. We went out of St. Catherines sound to the CAT reef. Others that are doing good in that area are KTK, DUA, ect. Any of the ones close to land ( 5-8 miles out) do pretty good this time of year. Check out this site for Georgia DNR. It shows all the reefs, location, type of structure and GPS #'s for the structure.

http://crd.dnr.state.ga.us/Assets/Do...eefs012110.pdf

I printed this out about a year ago and laminated all the pages and put it in a 3 ring binder to leave on the boat.

That's definitely Laminate worthy! Thanks for that great info. I'll have to try towing the boat up there sometime.

Good pics..have you ever cut up them into chunks and boiled the meat? Try it..dip em in butter and close your eyes. You'll be thinking lobster...

By the way..what were you using for bait??

I've never tried fishing the F. We usually fish from Gray's north. I saw a post the other day (on coastaloutdoors.com) about some big reds that got caught in December. With F being close to shore I would say bottom bite would be better than trolling. If you really want a good place to fish try Gray's reef. Its a little further north and east of F but its good for trolling and bottom fishing. You just cant anchor at Gray's. For trolling use mullet, pogeys, blue runners or ribbon fish. For bottom use squid, shrimp or cut bait. They all seem to work good for our area.

I fish at F reef if the weather is not cooperating to run further out. I was in this exact same situation this last year... catching some black sea bass and a few spanish. Well I decided to throw a freshly caught spanish out on a kingfish rig, about 15 minutes later the reel starts to sing. Biggest darn shark I have ever seen in my life. It swam right past the boat and never even knew it was hooked. We purposefully broke it off after seeing it, probably all of 13 ft long. Next time I will bring a bigger rig.
