A good friend of mine is restoring a beautiful ol girl. Launched in 1930 as the Acania she is 135' of amazing woodwork and steel. reportedly owned by Al Capone for a time, she has seen waters all over the world. He showed me a hidden panel bar and bottle storage during prohibition. Very cool stuff.
Due to be repowered by twin CAT's w/ Electro Hybrid drives in a few months. 8000gal fuel and 3500gal fresh water storage. Currently she is in Alameda getting topside paint and screws rebuilt. Attached is the direct link.
I crawled all around and through her with just my camera phone.
Holy *#@^! What a beauty. I can only imagine the expense associated with such an undertaking. What does he use the boat for? Please keep the pictures coming as it progresses.
Such a beautiful boat. For me, no matter what size, the boats of about 1918 to 1940 are what do it. This is a prime example. What deep pockets your bud must have (and good judgement about what he spends it on.)
Wish I had the money to rebuild something like that. Whats the plans for her?
He plans on trying to use for personal use 1 week a month as he is TRYING to retire. Two weeks at charter around the bay and Nor Cal, then 1 week layup, provisions and maint.
Wow ... I would like to see photos of the lower level. It sure looks like they are well on their way to having her restored. Which CAT engines has he chosen? Where had the boat been in the more recent past?

Not sure of the power as he is being pretty hush hush about them. I undrstand they are adaptable to some electroc hydraulic hybrid drives from Europe. I have seen the drawing for the engine room and the batter bank of around 40 batteries.
Most recently, the boat belonged to Miles Davis here in the Bay Area. Prior to that, you can read all of it's history on the link in the first post. Quite a bit of history in the old girl.
