Default Tideline 19 Plug Build

After looking through some of the great threads here of guys building their cold molded carolina boats, thought I would see if everyone would want to see some of the photos we took as we were building our prototype/plug for our 19.

We decided to build our plug from wood instead of having it cut from foam, so that we could actually go out and test it and make any modifications needed before committing to building a mold.

First we built the shearline with the jig beginning for the plug on top and the hull on bottom. This way we could build the deck plug and hull plug at the same time and insure they would mate properly down the road.

We then seperated and flipped the two jigs, this is the deck plug with the floor in place and the two cut outs for the gas tank coffins.

This is the hull jig set up after the stations were CNC cut.

This is a tunnel shot with the keels at full width before shaping. You will also notice the big flange around the whole thing, this is on both plugs and will leave a big flange on our molds to aid in bagging the parts.

If you guys are interested I will post more pics soon showing the process farther down the road.

Alright then, here are a few more as the build went along.

Shaping the keel and starting to get the sides in place.

The next two show the strips going in to form the flared bow.

Tidelines ,I think you've got a winner here , nice looking boat (a Carolina Cat) ,I know your working on your first boat but get ready ,I predict you guys are going to be busy ,and then people are ging to be asking for the 23 ,24 footer, wow this is the second time I get impressed by a cat builder ,the other one was the Freeman but he is out of my price line ,my guess is that finally boaters building boats .

Can you post the performance numbers you got out of the prototype?

Post more info on this boat as far as hp that will be needed. I think there is a market for a smaller cat now more then ever once gas prices start climbing again this spring.

Thanks for the interest guys, and jtburf for linking to our website, that is still a work in progress. As far as performance stuff goes, I dont want to get too ahead of ourselves. We had a naval architect run all sorts of computer programs on it before we started and once we had the wood prototype built up, we added weight to get to the approximate weight of the fiberglass version.

For our testing run we had a Suzuki 175 and in all honesty, I think that may be a bit too much for this boat. It is also impossible to say how much the numbers will change from the wooden prototype to the final glass version. Having said that, we were real pleased with how the boat ran once we got the motor mounted right. Without getting real particular, the prototype was going over 45 mph top end and getting over 5 mpg at cruise. We certainly hope we maintain these numbers with the glass version, but we just dont know yet. I have a feeling a 150hp will be the perfect motor for this boat and could probably get away with a little less for those not needing all out speed.

And let me add that my name is Michael, so you guys can stop calling me Tidelines, heh.

Here are a few more pics showing the progression. These are shots of the liner mold with the rear casting deck with flip up seats and livewell.

This shot is looking forward with the gas tank coffins in the foreground and the bow casting deck and storage in the background.

Looks good. What about self bailing drains? Water has to go somewere.

At 5 mpg at cruise, what was the cruise speed?

looks very nice! how about an option for a fuel tank in the console, and make the deck holes fish boxes? that would rock. Wondering what price level you intend to have? I know you won't have any specific numbers, but will it be lower, mid, or upper level for its size class?

and...more pics!

Prockvoan, on the prototype, we were cruising at 30 mph when we were getting over 5 mpg by a good bit, hopefully those numbers carry thru to the glass version. Good question on the water bailing. You can not see it in the plug pics at that stage, but we have cutouts for a low profile water drain from Gemlux in each aft corner of the deck just in front of the flip seats. They will drain overboard via thru hulls on the side.

Iwhite, converting the gas coffins to fish boxes is not something we would want to do. First off, you would really cut down your fuel carrying ability from 48 gallons to around 20, if that. You would lose the cooler under the front console seat, shift your center of gravity higher, have to find a whole other area in the bilge for batteries and lots of other issues. The way I will lay my boat out will have a mid size cooler under the leaning post for drinks/food/etc. The cooler under the front console will be where I keep my fish (trout, drum and the like) and if for some reason I was going after much bigger fish there is plenty of room between the console and the bow casting deck for a large removable cooler. Didn't even mention the livewell in the back. So I think there should be plenty of room for fish remembering this is really a 19' bay boat and not likely targeting 200# yellowfins.

And since you asked for more pics, here are the last few pics after we have turned her over and hot coated her with resin to go out and test. There is a temporary floor in there that is quite a bit higher than our actual floor will be, just needed something to stand on. I had nothing to do personaly with the impressive woodwork in these shots, that is our builder Ken Adams, I just worked with sandpaper mostly. The shots are sort of blurry from the dust and such.

Transom in with temporary floor.

Woodwork on the inside of the tunnel.

Carolina flare and dont worry, that is not our real console, just something to stick controls on.

Shot of the inside of the tunnel. Yes, our builder wanted to strangle us when he saw the curves he was going to have to build. Think each strip ended up being about 1-2" wide.

WOW!!! A cat with Carolina flair and shearband. Not that's a good looking boat. I've always been a little partial to catboats. I know it's hard to do but a little tumblehome would look nice too. Would require a multiple piece mold
