I'm hoping/guessing that they hit that when the tide was 3' higher. Or is that whole thig floating that high to begi with? I don't see any warnings around there though, explain this area to us.

There is a light right where he hit. Almost like he was aiming for it. Those are most definitely floating. Dredges are typically poorly lighted unless you know what you are looking at (as we all should), then its obvious which way you transit around a dredge. Of course in this situation some lights could have been out or something. Who knows.

That's the Dame's Point Bridge in the background. That may be on the St John's though I can't see any markers and how wide it is just there. I can't tell from the pics if that is to the west of the bridge (towards downtown Jax), or east towards the mouth of the St John's.
I did not personally see the boat. It was reported to be in the St. Johns River near the Dames Point as Menzie mentioned. I can't quite figure out where it is. Other boats said that dredge pipes and barrels are everywhere strung across the river and very difficult to see.
The more I look at it, I think this would be west of the Dames Point and west of Blount Island. There was another picture of the steering wheel snapped in half and I just hope there were no injuries when this happened. Coming to an abrupt stop, depending on speed, I can see a body or head coming forward and hitting something.
Yeah thats definatly a floating pipe system for a dredge, they use them here all the time to take the sand from the inlets and pump it back on the beaches.
Yes...I see the light, wheather it was lit or not who knows. But he was definatly cruising when he hit it. And judging by that hole in the side of the hull landing completely on top of the floats was a blessing.
Its on the town side of the dames point bridge southside of the river. Most of these dredge pipes are not marked or the yellow lights are burned out. There are also some abandon pipes on the backside of blount island terminal.
If you look at the forward edge of the hole, right at the chine, that glass looks to be pretty thick. I have never owned a Chapparal but a friend had 1 before and currently has one. I have been impressed with how his has held up.
