Default How do you fly Old Glory?

Looking for the best spot to fly the flag. I think my best bet would be on a bow rail post as I don't have many spots. Where do you guys display the flag proudly?

I fly it from my VHF, low, just above the mount.

location should be one of proper position and not purely aesthetics or convenience.
there are guidelines on flag placement. Generally it is located in a place of honor on the vessel which is usually on the stern and usually dead center on the stern on a flag staff of appropriate size for the flag being displayed. On larger vessels that can accommodate, while on the hook, moored, or docked the flag is displayed at the stern and while underway it is displayed on top on a mast.
Most are not incensed when a flag is not properly displayed, but some do take serious offense particularly those who may have served in the forces.

According to my Chapman's bc22 is correct (although he lives in Canada ). Interestingly, it goes on to say, "Never fly the American flag from the masthead of a mast equiped with a gaff. The gaff, even though lower in height, is the place of honor. It illustrates several boats with masts. Some are flying ensigns which are actually higher than the American flag, which looks strange to me, but this is what Chapmans says.

Kingair, how is it attached to the VHF? I think that's my best option. It looks like it would fly off if not secured but I guess thats why you fly it low?

Most boating stores sell a antenna or pole mount flag clip set. They mount to the antenna with a zip tie and some foam and are easily removeable. They usually run around $7.00 for 2 clips.

Just do a search on amazon for "flag clips".

I use zip ties, and fly it low so it is on the thickest portion of the antenna, and therefore will not damage it.

Do not fly the ensign from the bow. Ever. If that's the ony place you can think of, you are better off not flying it at all.

Put a mount on your transom and fly it there.

BTW,

There's no such thing as a flag pole on a boat. Its a flag staff.

I do a lot of volunteering for things like Norfolk Harborfest. I fly it from my outrigger and NEVER lower than any other flag or pennant.
