Default I Wish I Had These Skills!

I stopped by to see a friend of mine to see what project he's doing. It's a 19'9" long Lunenburg Dory. I've stopped by before this past summer while he was building a "Bastard". That's similar to a dory but with a traditional stern of a skiff. You probably seen him before building a dory, he's in the opening scenes of the movie "The Perfect Storm"!

Great pictures the fourth one "drills and clamps" has a yankee screw driver in it. Haven't seen anyone use on of those in a long time. Probably a lot of boats have come out of that shop over the years?

I'd say he slaps together one per month. His shop is part of the Gloucester Maritime Heritage Center and he also teaches students the art of dory making. The one you see here is for the International Dory Race committee. They hold a series of races against our Canadian counterparts every year. And when the boats are not racing anyone can use the boats for a yearly $50.00 membership. I'd say one of the best deals on the water anywhere!

Interesting that you would call that tool a Yankee screwdriver. We call it a brace and bit. A Yankee screwdriver has push action to twist the bit (screw type thread) and a pull back chuck to change bits (something like pulling back a foreskin - hope this isn't too graphic). I hope I am looking at the same tool as you were.

Yeah I miss stated. I haven't seen a yankee screw driver in many years and for that matter I haven't seen anyone use a brace in many years either. When I was a young electrician apprentice I spent a lot of time with a brace & auger bit drilling studs.

Yeah...as soon as somebody decided to put a screwdriver bit into a cordless drill-motor, it was all over...
