Skyline Drive and Blue Ridge Parkway, 2 of the best motorcycle road in the East. Never saw a bear but the deer population was all over the place. At feeding time it was a must to be very observent of the deer along the roadway.

I agree 100%. I took a motorcycle tour through there a few years back and it was one of the best rides I have ever been on. Lots of great road, great scenery, wildlife galore. Almost hard to pay attention to riding with so much to see.
When going through the pictures about a week later, there was one shot of a guy and his wife and their bike with the woods as a backdrop. We had no idea at the time but we saw that there was a bear walking towards us through the woods in teh backround. We never even saw it until the picture was developed. It was a decent ways away still but it was heading our way. I guess we left at the right time.

Man I miss the Smokies. Been way too long since i've been up there. I used to spend alot of time hiking the Park, even did a short college internship with the Park Service.
Last time up, my wife and I hiked to Gregory's Bald, out of Cades Cove, to see the flame azalea blooms. We were one of the last ones down off the bald, and I noticed that alot of folks ahead of us were snacking while hiking. I told my wife that I wouldn't be surprised if some bears showed up after smelling all the food. I kept the lead, and sure enough I rounded a bend in the trail and came face to face with a big 'un. I know the correct thing is to stand your ground, but I gotta tell you, that goes against all your instincts. He was still, staring me in the eye. I picked up a big stick and started slamming it into the bushes as I slowly approached him. He stood his ground for a short while, then slowly eased off into the woods. When we walked past, I could see him staring up at us from about 30 yards away. Didn't take us long to make it back to the vehicle.
