Default Clam eating a Racoon

This morning I walked out on my dock to check my crab traps on the way back I saw a Racoon in the marsh about 4' from the dock. This wasn't unusual but what was unusual was he didn't move. My first thought was rabid racoon so I went to the house and got my pistol. When I returned he was in the same spot but as I looked closer he didn't seem to be rabid. I tossed him some vienna sausage to see if he'd move when I noticed something wrong with his hind leg. Turns out he had a large clam about the size of a softball suck on it. I've seen this before with marsh birds but not a racoon. I tried to snare him and remove the clam without any luck. Coons don't like to be snared and they can bite right thru a welding glove! Tomorrow I'll call NE Florda Wildlife Coalition if he's still in distress. You can see the clam in the far right lower corner of the photo.

I figure either the clam ate the **** or the clam opened and let the little guy free. I live in a pretty remote area and we have a lot of coons it always amazes me how tame they appear but how mean they are.

On edit I can't believe the short word for racoon got deleted above even the wildlife has to be politically correct.

Any of the normal critters around our homes (all of us) if you have patience you can befriend them where they will not be scared of you and you will be amazed at how curious they are of us. Great pictures and glad your friend was not there. He;s fine. Just one more lesson in his life he learned and you got to share it with him..

I thought I was the only person or thing attacked by clams. I purchased a few dozen to go tog fishing one morning and next thing I know they are out of the bag and attacking me as I drove down the road.

I caught an oversize possum one time with heavy gloves and that dude went NUTS. I wouldn't attempt that with a raccoon on a million-dollar bet. Glad he got free.

We have a lot of quahogs and it always amazes me how tame they appear but how mean they are. Never go quahog raking without a buddy and keep that rake sharp!

Do clams actually eat the meat? What the heck??

Just last week, I walked down to the beach by my house (on bay), and laying on the beach is about a 32" hole striped Bass, which abou 1/4 of his belly missing. Hmmm, that's wierd. I look over, and about 10' away, laying on the beach is a dead racoon. Both of them looked VERY fresh, no longer than 24 hours old. The day before we had a flood tide with a nor'easter storm, so the water was well above the beach and went down the street and woods in the area where I found this "crime scene".

So, un-answered is:
1. Did the racoon catch and kill this bass? And if so, did he start eating it and then die?
2. Was it a complete coincidence? There are LOTS of racoons in the area, but I have neve seen a striped bass in the bay near there.
3. Did the Striped bass catch, and try eating the racoon? If so, what killed the bass?
4. Did the bass somehow get washed ashore or stuck on the beach in the flood, and then did the racoon just drown trying to drag the bass up the flooded beach....?

Was just a bizare site. Never thought to shot a pic, should have.
