Just last week, I walked down to the beach by my house (on bay), and laying on the beach is about a 32" hole striped Bass, which abou 1/4 of his belly missing. Hmmm, that's wierd. I look over, and about 10' away, laying on the beach is a dead racoon. Both of them looked VERY fresh, no longer than 24 hours old. The day before we had a flood tide with a nor'easter storm, so the water was well above the beach and went down the street and woods in the area where I found this "crime scene".

So, un-answered is:
1. Did the racoon catch and kill this bass? And if so, did he start eating it and then die?
2. Was it a complete coincidence? There are LOTS of racoons in the area, but I have neve seen a striped bass in the bay near there.
3. Did the Striped bass catch, and try eating the racoon? If so, what killed the bass?
4. Did the bass somehow get washed ashore or stuck on the beach in the flood, and then did the racoon just drown trying to drag the bass up the flooded beach....?

Was just a bizare site. Never thought to shot a pic, should have.
This sounds like a case for CSI. I think it's unlikely the racoon drowned I've heard tales of racoons drowning hunting dogs. Maybe a mega clam killed them both and fled the scene when he heard you approaching.

I think the clam dried out and died, or weakened enough for the 'cooon to get loose.

Where in Jax was this aggressive clam? I live in Isle of Palms and there has been a rash of break-ins and I haven't seen a clam at all. Strange. Just kidding about the break-ins but the clams have been staying out of sight.

The scene of the crime was Black Hammock Island on Nassau Sound by bouy 46A. Clams seem to be congregating out here I'm fearful of gang activity. We sometimes see them on the bank flashing gang signs as we cruise by. The clams are somewhat manageable when they are traveling alone but when they gang up it can be pretty rough. I'm fearful we may soon have some boatjackings.

THT dictionary: Gang or clams, clam gangs = clangs.

Love that area. Used to hang out in Nassau Sound a lot but haven't been in a few years. Spent the night up there years ago and dug up a 5 gallon bucket of clams and had steak and clams. Man that was good but I think now it is illegal to get clams there now?

Kinda worried about meeting up with the clangs. If a clam comes up to you and says, "Watchu lookin at....bitch", run, they don't roll very fast.

Clangs I thought I saw that on the back of one of their leather vest and didn't know what it meant. I try not to make eye contact with them so I didn't ask.

I've lived on Nassau Sound since 1974 and fished their since the 60's. My dock is about a mile from Bird Island and I'm out there at least once a week and sometimes overnight to watch the sunrise. Yeah it's illegal to dig the clams but..... Actually I think it's illegal anywhere in duval county. When I retired I tried to get a permit/lease to raise them in floating beds as a hobby but they wouldn't allow it in duval county. I guess they figure the crime rate is already to high

Raccoons are notorious leisure swimmers. Obviously the raccoon was having a midnite swim, was mistaken for a Creek Chub by the bass, swallowed and the raccoon began eating his way out of the belly of the bass. The extra weight of the **** took the bass to the bottom and when the ****'s feet touched bottom, he walked the bass straight out of the water onto the beach. Exhausted, the **** began having left paw radiating pain, a sure sigh of a **** cardiac event.

Likely the **** died of cardiac arrest and the bass died of shame, combined with a gastro problem precipated by the gnarly choppers nibbling leg holes in the bass belly. Just my diagnosis...unless their's an unsub out
there, trying to get back a his mother. I'll bet the clam's dna matches one footprint of the rogue raccoon.

Be afraid, be very afraid.
