Had the same experience described in the article in 1990. Fishing out of Shinnecock 40 fathom line in a 29 ft express. Flat calm. A huge wave (15ft)started forming 300 yards from us and continuued across the stb bow for about 2 minutes. Then this enormous rectangular monster slowly appeared. Was several minutes before I figured it out. Scary.

Yes it was.
There were three Coast Guard boats escorting it. One on each side, and another in front of it.

Exactly!
At first when you don't know what is going on, it is sort of scary.

The Greenville did a rapid surfacing maneuver, Poor fishermen were just in the wrong spot.

I remember when submarines would come through the Charleston Harbor. It always cool to be fishing the jetty's and see one go cruising by. The bad thing was that you would have to pull anchor and get away from the rocks because they kicked out a huge amount of wake.

WOW! I have pics from a few years back I was fishing with a buddy of mine and his father out of Haulover in Miami and on the way in we came upon a boomer heading out from Fort Lauderdale. They look big dockside but come close to one in open water and its an eye opening experience. They are very fast and you cant hear a sound except for water moving.

That is cool as hell. I am reading a book right now called Bling Man's Bluff about the sub service and it is a fascinating book.

I have read Das Boot, but not Blind Mans Bluff.
Here is a summary and excerpt of it:

My boss for many years was Norman H Walker. A submariner who was one of the men interviewed by the History Channel about the book. I worked for him for years, and he rarely talked about his sub service, especially the later years.
He was one of the men responsible for rescuing several of the sailors on the sub that had the explosion. It was amazing finally sitting down with him in his home in Kentucky and hearing of his exploits. We stayed up and spoke until the wee hours of the morning. He never mentioned why he didn't bring his honorable past up....until he admitted he was an alcoholic and was booted out of the service after 19 yrs.
He was eventually allowed to join the reserves and received a full retirement. His life story was written about in a book called "Hero in a Bottle"; itself an interesting read.

Cool pics.

Here's a couple from the Keys.

That's a periscope in the middle. I saw it from a distance trolling and headed to see what it was. They hailed me on the radio, read off my exact GPS position, and asked me to keep a one or two mile distance. I thought about asking if I could troll around them (talk about a floater ) but decided it wouldn't be a good idea.

Different day, same year I think. Saw him when I was running out so I slowed down to take some pics. I'm sure they were watching.

Those things are huge.

Marlin, since you were not supposed to see where they were, you may well have moved one or two miles in their direction.
Or ask them to get further out of the water for you to identify their number or who you were talking to.

I mean, I would have tried
