Just like fishing gear don't rush in to spend more $$. People will tell you to forget the kit lens that comes w/camera. I'd say shoot with it for awhile. The nikon kits lenses do a good job. Later consider what lenses to get for a little zoom, wide angle, etc. A digital SLR is a lotta fun. This was a quick "snatch and snap" shot at night with my D50 and the 18-55 kit lens that came with it. No way you get this with a point and shoot.

Granted it’s an old saw however “the best camera is the one you have with you”.

I tried a larger Canon camera but returned it and bought my Canon Power Shot SX200 is.

It fits in my shirt pocket, with a neck strap for safety, always ready and I take lots of photos. On automatic I get great photos, and lots of them.
