Back in December 14,2007 a devestating fire hit Gloucester. 29 residents were without a home and one resident tragically died. Within weeks all the displaced residents were in new homes thanks to the efforts of the community! I just found these photos that was lost when my computer crashed a few month ago, some I never posted before.
As always, nice work Jay!
What a terrible tragedy. I will stop short of saying the photo is "gorgeous", simply because I see destruction and suffering in the photo.
What came out of the fire was how quickly those who lost their home were in new homes after the fire. The community really rallied and came up with clothing, furnature and money. The next door temple is getting ready to rebuild. When the 1st alarm came in there was just of hint of smoke in the building, firefighters using heat thermal cameras discovered fire in the walls and between the 1st and 2nd floor. That was probably what saved all but one of the residents. The resident that didn't make it was trapped in his 2nd floor bathroom. The window was too small for firefighters to get him out even though one firefighter was able to squeeze through. By that time the victim retreated back into the apartment and the fireman couldn't go on,flames and heavy smoke was too heavy and was lucky to get out alive. Fifteen minutes into the initial call it became an 8 alarm fire! Most of the downtown roof tops were covered in snow,if not most of downtown would have burned. Burning embers were reported over 3 miles away! http://capeannimages.blogspot.com/20...revisited.html
