That time of year to "Haul Hull"! And with out surprise ...mayhem on the boat ramp! If you ever want to see an idiot in action, just go to your neighborhood boat ramp! http://capeannimages.blogspot.com/20...haul-hull.html
might want to consider a more secure way of keeping the stern fastened...even if its a short distance to and from the ramp; a ratchet tie down may be a better solution then tying line to a deck cleat....

clean rig none the less!
It's worked for me on every boat I've owned. In this case 3000 lbs of boat sitting on a light trailer ain't going no where. What I can't believe is that most boats large & small I see at the ramp have no transom tie downs at all !
Last two boats I bought did not come with any Stern tie downs. The first was bought from a dealer. I told him the deal was off if he did not throw them in.
The other was a private sale. I immediately added a strap across the back.
Looks like he scratched the port side of the bow...

Without stern straps going forward to the trailer you're completely relying on the bow hood eye/winch strap/winch/winch stand to keep that boat from rolling off the rollers during repeated acceleration cycles. And without a strap from the bow eye down to the trailer you're completely relying on the weight of the boat to keep it from riding up the bow stop roller during rapid deceleration.
You've got a lot more faith in that stuff than I do!

What you didn't see in the pics was after I lowered the antenna I used the bowline and double looped it under the frame forward the winch stand. That prevents the bow from bouncing on the bow V roller. Also once the boat is winched in place the safety chain is hooked up. To get home I have 3 large hills to contend with, never had a problem.
Interesting note: The day I picked up the boat from the dealer I noticed after I got home(about a 20 mile ride) they never tied down the stern! If anything happened it would have been my fault for not noticing but nothing did!
I would not want to put that kind of side load on those engine bolts especially where the brackets are not against the engine. SS is brittle it does not take much to snap it.
Jay, I have only owned three boats, but have never had one without stern tie-downs. However, I have never had trim tabs either. Was your boat equipped with them but taken off when the trim tabs were put on or did it just come that way. I realize you have never had a problem with your short tows, but we regularly tow 50 to 250 miles each way, sometimes over rough roads and I believe the tie-downs are essential.
Have always enjoyed your pictures, thanks for putting them on this site.

Thanks! The boat came equipped with trim tabs as part of the standard package. This is the 1st boat I've owned that had trim tabs and can't ever see being with out them! It takes a few trips to get used to them but once you have, their operation becomes second nature.
As far as tying down the the transom I've used my dock lines since way back when. And I have towed all over New England without problems. To me having dedicated tie down straps is having something that can get lost, stolen , in the way or the metal hardware gets corroded as I have seen before. http://capeannimages.blogspot.com/20...haul-hull.html
