Default New Boat Build Thread Winter Project

Starting a CB Boatworks project. Will be my winter project but getting things started now as we have our best fishing starting, so won't have a whole lot of time right now. Anyway, jigs are set and ready to start the keel. Got to bend that 1/4 Douglas Fir around the jig in 4 layers. Looks like it's going to be pretty tough. Will be taliking to Gene and Marc a lot at CB Boatworks. Great guys and the jig went together perfectly. Any suggestions from boat builders are certainly welcome. Never built one so it is going to be a learning experience.

It's set up for 19' but we are looking at extending the last 2 jigs another 2 feet to make it 21'

That's what we are thinking. Going to build a steam box this week. Only need to bend about 7' for the bow.

Best of luck on it parrott, I will stay tuned as well. What a great way to start a project like that.

I wish I had the ambition to do that. When I had the ambition, I didn't have the time. Kinda pizzes me off to see now you can just buy those jigs and snap them together. It's kinda like when they came out with the 1st battery screw-guns, first pneumatic nail guns, the Bobcat... WHERE WERE THEY WHEN I REALLY NEEDED THEM? Then again, the digital calculator and the 1st Macintosh computer couldn't have come at a better time for me

Contact CB Boatworks. They can set up pretty much any size you like. I bought this jig as a special as it was already cut and was in their way. Will be looking to do a 24 next.
Will be starting the stringers shortly as we get ready for the steaming the keel boards.

You need clamps not a steambox. That fir will bend if it is thin enough. Try to use full 2X4s in the aft part of the boat with scarf joints. Tapering up forward to 1/4" X4.

Tarbaby. I read your whole thread on your build. Beautiful boat. I hope mine turns out half as good as yours. Do you think ripping the 1X4's in half (3/8" thick)will bend around the keel up front?

It will or won't bend..... You need to cut it thin enough to get it to bend.... You could get a sheet of 1/4" plywood and rip it at 4" widths. That should bend. Many layers will be strong. My shearclamp is made of laminated plys. It really doesn't matter what you make it out of as long as it is the right thickness when it comes time to plane it off. The smaller the boat the tighter the radius... so thinner boards to make the bend.

Got a few hours in today and got the second jig setup. Stringers are cut and should be able to laminate them next week. Got it worked out to 21'. Still got a lot going on, hoping to go fishing tomorrow. What a mess we made today!!!!

Got a chance to work for a couple hours after work this afternoon. Got the first layer 1X4 on the keel of both boats. Going to work tomorrow and try to get both keels complete and laminate all the stringers. All the battens and chine logs are ripped and ready. Our steam pot worked great.

Got all 4 laminates on both keels. Will let sit overnight and remove tomorrow for epoxy laminating. All stringers are laminated and drying.
